Jack Schneider is “On His Way’

It isn’t unusual to see numerous jobs listed on the biography for a new comer to the music business, but it is unusual for a new artist to have a list of Who’s Who in the credits on their debut album.

But Americana music artist Jack Schneider is just such an artist…

On November 11, Schneider will release “Best Be on My Way” with Vince Gill, David Rawlings, Dennis Crouch, and Stuart Duncan among the artists contributing their skills to the album.

Prior to becoming a recording artist in his own right, Schneider was a record producer, songwriter, rhythm guitar player for Vince Gill, and a graduate of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University.

“Best Be on My Way” was recorded live in the studio in Nashville, Tennessee; which means all of the musicians played together at the same time, not individually which is the more common practice today.

The first single from the album Josephine” is out now.

In his native New York City a triple threat is someone who sing, dance, and act; but in his adopted home of Nashville, Jack Schneider is considered a triple threat because he can sing, play guitar, and write songs.  He has been playing the guitar since he was three years old…the rest came along a little later.

The tracklisting for “Best Be on My Way”:
“Farewell Carolina”
“Best Be On My Way”
“Don’t Look Down”
“Slow Things Down”
“Nothing Left To Show”
“In The Morning”
“Del Rio Blues”

Schneider also has a few concert dates coming up:

Sept 26 at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, IL

Despised Icon Celebrate 20 Years

As every musician knows, “making it” and becoming successful is a tough job.  As Australian rocker AC/DC say in their song “It’s a Long Way to the Top if You Want to Rock and Roll”.  Thus, an anniversary for longevity is worth celebrating.

Despised Icon are celebrating 20 years of making music with a rarities release.  The EP “Deterre” is set for an October 28 release.

Band member Alex Erian spoke on the band and their beginnings saying, “2004 was a definitive year for Despised Icon. After switching from drums to vocals and recruiting Alex Grind behind the kit, we started experimenting more and more, blending various elements of Death Metal and Hardcore together. Eager to get our name out, we played every show we could jump on and quickly recorded demo versions of ‘Bulletproof Scales’ and ‘Warm Blooded’.”

He added, “after uploading both tracks to Myspace and mailing a few hand-assembled CD-R promo copies to labels, people were finally starting to notice. The next thing we knew, we were booked on our first US tour with DEICIDE and were in the studio working simultaneously on a split CD for Relapse Records and on our sophomore album The Healing Process for Century Media.”

He concluded, “unearthed after 17 years and available on tape and 10″ vinyl formats for the very first time, the five demo tracks on ‘Déterré’ capture the energy and excitement of that era. We hope you enjoy this limited edition EP and look forward to sharing new music with you in 2023.”

Sir Paul Releases Boxed Set

Previously Sir Paul McCartney has released “McCartney”, “McCartney II”, and “McCartney III”.  Now all three albums are available as a special edition boxed set that include some special photos and notes a oUt the albums from Sir Paul himself.

The set is being offered as a three CD set and as a three LP package in either the traditional black or in colour – clear, white, and creamy white.

A career spanning collection, the original “McCartney” album was released in 1970 and was Sir Paul’s solo debut.  “McCartney II” came in 1980 after Wings, and the final installment of the trilogy came amidst a global pandemic in 2020 that left millions of musicians with time on their hands.

Sir Paul began his career as the bass player for a group of mop topped lads from Liverpool, England and helped to turn The Beatles into one of the biggest bands on the planet.   The Beatles broke up in 1970; there generations of people who have never seen the band live, but the music is still immensely popular.

But Sir Paul has never let himself be pigeon holed into one style of music.  A multi instrumentalist who can play dozens of instruments, he has composed  alleys, classical compositions, pop music, rock and roll, and even electronic music.

And the new “McCartney” collections demonstrates a little of it all as the man himself gives fans a glimpse into his musical world.

Bailey Plays Bach Suites

Every Classical musician knows that there is much more to performing a piece of music than just following the notes written upon the musical staff.  Performing a piece of Classical music is also about interpreting those notes.  Some of those pieces are more difficult to interpret than others; like the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, who provided no annotations on how he thought his work should be performed.

While some artists shy away from the Cello Suites by Bach, Grammy Award winning cellist Zuill Bailey relishes in them and has released a limited edition set of all six of Bach’s Cello Suites.

Available now, Octave Records is offering a four LP boxed set of Zuill Bailey performing all six of the Suites solo.  The boxed collection is limited to just 500 copies and have been signed by the artist.  After using the latest technology available to press the records, each was inspected by hand to ensure the best possible sound quality.

The Suites were not recorded in the studio but rather in a theatre – the Ikeda Theater in the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona.

One of the world’s premiere cello players, Bailey and his      1693 Italian Mateo Goffriller Ex Mischa Schneider “Rosette” cello, has shared the stage with numerous artists including Itzhak Perlman, Stanislav Skrowaczewski, Jaime Laredo, János Starker, and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra.

Bailey originally recorded the Cello Suites in 2008, but after a world pandemic and some time away from his cello, he returns to the works with a new outlook on how they should be performed; saying, “I began playing Bach very differently – simpler. I found it purifying.  The less I tried to ‘interpret’ the music, the better it sounded.”

Speaking on the Suites, Bailey said, “when I was a kid, the Bach Cello Suites were not played in public – they were so difficult that people were afraid of them.  Yet in my 20s and 30s they became my guide and have remained so.”  He notes that, “this cello was made when Bach was eight years old, so it was the sound he would have heard when composing the Suites.”

The four vinyl LP set sells for $149 on the Octave Records site.  The collection is also available in a variety of digital download formats and on CD.

David Beck Mixes it Up on New LP

When David Beck decided to record a new album, he had one thought in his head…”what if?”  And then came the Brian Setzer treatment of mixing styles and genres.  The result is “Bloom and Fade” – an album that mixes the idea of the Texas Storytellers with the the sounds of Coldplay, The War on Drugs, and Big Thief.  On the surface the idea sounds like polar opposites but the result is a blend of the two worlds.

“Bloom and Fade” is set for a September 30 release but the first single “Miner’s Song” is available now.

Rod Stewart sings that “Every Picture Tells a Story” but for Beck, every song has a story…a story from days gone by.

David Beck comes a musical family in Texas Hill Country.  Songwriting and making music are in his blood.  He uses that musical heritage to answer the question “what if?” On his upcoming album “Bloom and Fade”.

Country singer Adam Warner has a new album coming out – “What We’re Known For”.  But before he lets loose of the release, Warner teases fans with the first single from the album I’m a tribute to Country Music legend Charlie Daniels with his version of “Long Haired Country Boy”.

The U.S. Marine veteran grew up in Lawrenceville, Illinois where he spent a lot of time hearing “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” star and calls him his biggest musical inspiration.

Calling himself a “bad influence”, Adam Warner is a whole lot of country and a little bit of rock and roll.  Any football fan who has entered Nissan Stadium over the past four years for a Tennessee Titans game has heard Warner’s voice blasting from the speakers with “Welcome to the South”.

Warner even recorded “Long Haired Country Boy” at  Capricorn Studios in Macon, Georgia; the same location where Daniels recorded the original song back in 1974.

Warner spoke on recording the song saying, “Charlie has always been a hero of mine.  And one of the coolest things about music is it’s timeless, and lives on long after we’re gone. So I wanted to do my part to keep Charlie’s musical legacy living forever!”  Daniels died in 2020 at tHe age of 83.

A portion of the proceeds from the song are being donated to The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project; an organization that helps to secure funding to aid veterans.

“I’m blessed and honored to support the Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project through this recording of Charlie’s classic song.  So take a listen, and help support a veteran!”, said Warner.

Blondie to Release Boxed Set

This is the first collection of Blondie’s music to be authorized by the band.

Included in the collection is a total of 124 songs – 36 of which have never been released, two volumes of liner notes with a track by track commentary, an illustrated discography, and numerous previously unreleased photos.

The collection has been remastered from the original analog masters recorded at Abbey Road Studios.

The Deluxe format has four LP’s.  There is an eight CD and three CD editions as well.

The collection comes wrapped in a foil carton.

When Blondie broke onto the scene in 1972, they were a groundbreaking group with a female lead singer and what is believed to be one of the first songs to include rapping.

Lead singer Debbie Harry spoke on the band’s music and the collection saying, “it really is a treat to see how far we have come when I listen to these early attempts to capture our ideas on relatively primitive equipment. Fortunately the essence of being in a band in the early 70’s held some of the anti-social, counter culture energies of the groups that were the influencers of the 60’s. I am excited about this special collection. When I listen to these old tracks, it puts me there like I am a time traveler. As bad as it was sometimes, it was also equally as good. No regrets. More music.”

Guitarist Chris Stein added, “I am hopeful that this project will provide a glimpse into the ‘process’ and some of the journey that the songs took from idea to final form.  Some of this stuff is like early sketches; the old tape machines are like primitive notebooks. The trickiest thing for me was always about getting the melodies out of my head into reality and the changes that would happen along the way.”

Drummer Clem Burke continued, “it is amazing that after all this time, and against the odds, our Blondie archival box set will finally be released. It’s been a long time coming and we are all very happy and excited with the final results.”

Lavender Country Returns

It is often said in the world of entertainment that everything old is new again.

Truer words were never spoken when it comes to Country music pioneers Lavender Country.

Caught in a time when the phrase LGBTQ+ was never spoken and homosexuals and lesbians remained far back in the closet, Seattle resident Patrick Haggerty took a brave step and formed the band Lavender Country. Along with some friends, the group recorded an album by the same name that for years languished somewhere in the ether of time.

Fifty years later, Haggerty has returned with a reformed Lavender Country…and a new album filled with songs with an LGBTQ+ theme…and no apologies.

Now 78, Haggerty spoke on the original album saying “‘Lavender Country’ had no commercial value when we made it because it was too outlandish. But it was really too outlandish for any genre. So we didn’t have any choice except to make it ourselves and the community of folks who were doing Stonewall rebellion stuff in Seattle.”

Haggerty estimates that they sold around 1,000 copies of the original album.

He continued, “there was a little wound in my heart about the fact that Lavender Country was dead and wasn’t ever going to go anywhere and nobody was ever going to listen to it. But it turned out that I was wrong.”

Now married with a family, Haggerty was surprised when in 1999 the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum reached out and wanted to add the album in a roundup of gay oriented country music.

Despite being out of print, the album appeared on YouTube where a music collector brought the album to the record label Paradise of Bachelors. The label surprised Haggerty once again when they reached out to him and reissued the album in 2014. The album was turned into a ballet and was performed in San Francisco.

Seeing his dreams of being a Country music star revived, Haggerty has collaborated with Trixie Mattel, Orville, Peck, and Paisley Fields.

Fields is one of the musicians who have joined Haggerty and Lavender Country for the new album “Blackberry Rose and Other Songs of Sorrow”.

Out now, “Blackberry Rose” includes original Lavender Country songwriters and over a dozen news contributors. The new album includes “Gay Bar Blues”, “Clara Frazer, Clara Frazer”, and “Stand On Your Man”. The album’s title track “Blackberry Rose” strays from the gay theme to tackle racism with a folk tale of a mixed couple and murder in the South.

James Brown may be the godfather of Soul, but Patrick Haggerty is the godfather of queer Country music.

Noting that the album was originally created to foster social change, Haggerty said, “I made ‘Lavender Country’ to use it as a vehicle to foment social change. I was using it as a vehicle to fight fascism. And now 50 years later, I get to use ‘Lavender Country’ for the exact reason I made it in the first place.”

David Jameson Wanders ‘The Tall Dark Pines’

Country Noir artist David Jameson has just released his debut album “Tall Dark Pines”.

Corporate consultant turned songwriter, Jameson taps into a variety of experiences when creating the album. Those experiences include playing in some local establishments in China while on a college trip, participating in a national Chinese singing competitions where he even sang in Mandarin, coming in second on one such competition, and immersion in Malaysian culture while working as consultant; as well as Latin America, Europe, and South East Asia. Bust most of all, Jameson relished in soaking up new influences from the local cultures where ever he was.

It is these experiences and influences that can be heard in Jameson’s music with an album that mirrors his own life.

Percussionist Sangit Collaborates with the World on New LP

Israeli percussionist Sangit has released his second album “Studio Sessions”.  Ten years in the making the album is truly a world music venture featuring artists from around the world.

A truly collaborative effort, Sangit allowed the music to create itself as they played.  Each song comes with its own video that features the culture of the artists.

Released November 19, 2021; the album is only available as a digital download from Cumbancha.

Born Dotan in Hadera, Israel and raised on the Kfar-Glikson Kibbutz, Sangit took music and dance lessons as a child.  His first instrument was the saxophone at age eleven.

At 14, the family moved off the kibbutz to Zichron Yaakov.  A new home also brought a new instrument…the drums.  Sangit avoided military service – a requirement for all Israelis – at age 19 by moving to India where he began a journey of self discovery which included taking table and sitar lessons.

He received the name Sangit – music in Sanskrit – when he underwent the Sannyasa ceremony – pursuing a path of peace and simplicity.  Sangit noted that the name emphasizes his true calling in life.

Upon returning to Israel with a new name and view on life, Sangit attended the Rimon School of Music where he focused on composition and arrangement.  A year later the wanderlust returned and he travelled to Cuba to study percussion.

He co-founded the band Kuluma in 2004.  They released the album “Mother Tongue”.

It would be eight years before Sangit would release another album – “Open Channels” -; this time with his wife Noa.

In 2016, Sangit released his debut EP “Afro Love”.  Sangit’s full length debut album “Librar” was released in early 2020 and featured African and Afro-Cuban musical influences.

David Jameson Goes ‘Into the Pines’ on Debut LP

Nashville singer songwriter David Jameson will release his debut album “Tall Dark Pines” on January 27.

The former engineer and consultant has lived and travelled all over the globe but has turned in his suit for a guitar and manuscript paper to make his mark in music.  Jameson has relied on his various worldly experiences to create the songs found on the album.

The first single from the album is the title track…and a murder ballad in the vein of “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” but this time it’s the husband who takes matters into his own hands.

While in college, Jameson travelled to China where he did much more than check out the sights.  He performed on stage at local pubs.  His performances grew and he found himself not only competing in singing competitions; but doing so in Mandarin!  He even came in second in the Chinese equivalent of “American Idol”.

Jameson returned to college and later entered the professional world, but the call of music was too strong and he left the corporate world for the musical one in 2015.

Check out David Jameson’s music at davidjamesonmusic.com.

I wanted to show there was more depth to music from Japan from the 1970s and 80s. “The Donnie Vie Collection” features five studio albums plus an album of new unreleased songs that Vie took from his collection of home studio demos.

The collection is being offered on a flash drive; one that will also double as a VIP laminate for fans to use for meet and greets at his upcoming live performances.

Vie noted that some of the albums are hard to find items.

Vie spoke on his music saying, “I literally have no idea how many songs I’ve written or even how many things I’ve released with and without Enuff Z’Nuff, because it’s all about going on to the next thing as I finish the last. When I send it in, I’m finished with it and it’s all yours. In fact, there are actually songs I’ve only sung or listened to one time throughout the collection of all my records; that’s how many there are, and my policy that stands to this very day is, if it isn’t as good or better than my last it goes back into the pantry to possibly be used to season some other future creation. That is why my fans love me as much as they do, cuz I love them enuff to serve them something special each time I cook for them. It’s all about the fans. They are truly all that matters in this craft, or at least in my world. They never let me down so I never do to them. Now if we can only get about 20 million more of them we could change the world.”

Queen to Release ‘Greatest Hits’ Album

In 1981, music was available on vinyl, 8-track tape, or cassette tape.

That was the year that British rocker Queen released their “Greatest Hits” album. An album that went on to sell over 25 million copies around the world – six million of those in the United Kingdom! The album has spent over 900 weeks on the United Kingdom’s album chart – that’s 17 years on the music chart!

On July 2, Queen will be re-releasing their “Greatest Hits” album in a celebration of 50 years of making music.

When the re-release comes out, it will be available in a limited edition cassette and on CD. The limited edition cassette will be available exclusively on Queen’s online store and be available in four band member colour cassettes – 1,000 copies each. The CD slipcase will feature autographs by surviving members Brian May and Roger Taylor.

Queen was formed in 1970 and released their debut album in 1973. The rockers lost their flamboyant lead singer Freddie Mercury in 1991 at the age of 45 as a result of AIDS. Since that time, Queen has become members of the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame.

In recent years, Queen has made a resurgence with new lead singer Adam Lambert. Lambert was asked to join the band after he performed with the rockers on the season eight finale of “American Idol”. Lambert finished the season as the runner up to winner Kris Alen.

New Music from the Tragically Hip

The Tragically Hip have not released any new music since the death of Gordy Dowd in 2017…until now.

“Saskadelphia” is a collection of six previously unreleased songs set for a May 21 release.

The songs were originally written in 1990 but never made it onto an album…until now. Five of the songs were recorded in the Road Apple session while in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The sixth song is a live track that was performed in Montreal in 2000. While the live track was written at the same time as the others, an original recording has not been found.

Like with most albums, artists write and record more songs than ever make it on the final cut for any number of reasons. Thus was the case with the songs set to appear on “Saskadelphia”.

The Hip’s Johnny Fay spoke on the sings saying “we didn’t know what was there, so this meant baking them and listening to them as they were being transferred. Hearing them for the first time in 30 years was crazy.”

When Canadian Music celebrates 50 years of the JUNO Awards on June 6 Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush will be presenting The Tragically Hip with the Humanitarian Award. The band will also take the stage with Feist for a performance.

The track listing for “Saskadelphia”:

Folkie Reggie Harris is ‘On Solid Ground’

Science fiction has long been an outlet for social commentary; but it is music, especially folk music, that leads the way when it comes to expressing thoughts and feelings of society itself and current events.

Folk artist Reggie Harris offers not only his thoughts on current events, but has a long standing Old Folkie answer to a current problem…LOVE!

The most recent recipient of the Folk Alliance International Spirit of Folk Award has just released his new album “On Solid Ground” that features 13 songs that include themes that have long been a staple of Harris’ career but take on a whole new meaning in an age of heightened racism, racial injustice, and hate.

Sliding from one genre to another, Harris penned nine of the 13 songs on the album; which also includes “All You Need is Love” by The Beatles, “Hello in There” by John Prine, and “It Isn’t Nice” by Malvina Reynolds.

Harris notes that “On Solid Ground” is an album that is about healing and inspiration in this age of injustice and dissension.

Like many of America’s citizens of colour, Harris can trace his ancestry back to slavery…and a mixed parentage; for Harris it is a Confederate General Williams Carter Wickham and one of his slaves – Bibhanna Hewlett.  As a child growing up in Philadelphia, Harris was a part of the movement toward integration and the civil right movement.

“On Solid Ground” tracklisting:
“It’s Who We Are”
“My Working Bones”
“Come What May”

Luke Laird Visits ‘Music Row’

A Grammy Award winning songwriter and producer, Luke Laird has branched out to release his debut full length album “Music Row”.

Written and produced by Laird, “Music Row” is a musical autobiography of his journey as a young boy in rural Pennsylvania to becoming an award winning songwriter with numerous Grammy, Academy of Country Music, and Country Music Association awards in his trophy case.

On August 18, Laird launched his radio show on Apple Music that helps Country music fans discover or rediscover favourites from days gone by.

Speaking on his debut release; Laird said, “I’ve always been a fan of albums, but I’m not a huge fan of writing songs and randomly throwing them together then calling it an album.  But this made sense. It’s my story as a songwriter who moved to Nashville to write songs for other people.”

He added, “when I write a song, I enjoy it, and after I finish it, I like playing it, but really, as a songwriter, you want to share your songs with people.  That’s my favorite part of writing songs––sharing them, just seeing people connect to them. It’s such a gift.”

Laird has 24 number one hits, two Grammy Awards, and was named Songwriter of the Year by BMI and the Academy of Country Music.

Hopefully it resonates with someone out there.”

Transatlantic Double Dips on New Music

The Progressive supergroup Transatlantic have not only announced that they are releasing a new album; but are releasing two versions of that album.

Set for a February 5 release, “The Absolute Universe: The Breath of Life” and “The Absolute Universe: Forevermore” are more than an abridged and extended version of the same album.

Mike Portnoy spoke on the albums saying, “we’ve got two versions of this album. There is a two CD presentation, which is 90 minutes long, and a single one – that’s 60 minutes. However, the single CD is NOT merely an edited version of the double CD.”  He continued, “they each contain alternate versions and even in some cases, new recordings. We wrote fresh lyrics and have different people singing on the single CD version tracks as compared to those on the double CD.  Some of the song titles have also been changed, while others might remain the same, but compositionally what you’ll hear has been altered. You must appreciate that what we have done is unique. We revamped the songs to make the two versions different.”

Band mate Pete Trewavas added, “we did write some new music for the single CD.  What’s more, there are also differences in the instruments used on some of the tracks across the two records.”

Both albums will be offered in vinyl, CD, and digital download formats.

The band will also be offering a special boxed set – “The Absolute Universe: The Ultimate Edition” that will feature both albums in a five LP, three CD, and Blu-Ray collection that will include a behind the scenes documentary.

Transatlantic are Neal Morse, Mike Protnoy, Roine Stolt, and Pete Trewavas.
