Fifty years ago, British rockers Queen released their self titled debut album. On October 25, Queen fans will have the opportunity to get a remixed, remastered, and expanded version of the album. The Collector’s Edition will include six CD’s, a vinyl LP, and a 108 page book.
A single vinyl album and CD; a 2CD Deluxe edition, a single LP Picture disc, and a cassette of the album will also be available. Download and streaming versions will also be available.
The Collector’s Edition will feature a new tracklisting that will include alternative takes, demos, and live tracks. The set includes 63 tracks – 43 of them new. The remastered album restores the original song order and some “intimate fly-on-the-wall audio” in the studio. The song “Mad the Swine” was not included in the original album release; but has been restored on the remastered album.
The new collection is a first for Queen since the band has never released a remastered album.
Queen guitarist Sir Brian May wrote on the new collection in the liner notes saying, “this is not just a remaster, this is a brand new 2024 rebuild of the entire Queen debut album, which, with the benefit of hindsight, we have re-titled QUEEN I. All the performances are exactly as they originally appeared in 1973, but every instrument has been revisited to produce the ‘live’ ambient sounds we would have liked to use originally. The result is ‘Queen’ as it would have sounded with today’s knowledge and technology – a first. ‘Queen I’ is the debut album we always dreamed of bringing to you.”
The album went on to be certified gold for selling 100,000 copies by the RIAA – Recording Industry Association of America – in the United States.
Queen formed in 1970 with Freddie Mercury, Brian May, and Roger Taylor. John Deacon joined the band in 1971. Reminiscing on those early days, Roger Tayor said, “the first three years were really faith and fumes. We were penniless but we had a lot of belief in ourselves and a lot of energy.”
