Before the British Invasion and the Psychedelic era, releasing a double album was unheard of.  Even today if an artist puts out a new release, it is rare for it to contain more than a dozen songs unless is a boxed set with career spanning songs and multiple albums.

But Indie music artist Mac DeMarco is known for his “thinking outside the box” with his “slacker rock” and unique personality.

DeMarco’s newest album is whopping nine hour affair that features 199 songs – “One Wayne G.”.  In an age where artists dole their songs out one at a time via the most popular streaming service, DeMarco said, “I like this stuff. I’d like to share it. I don’t really know how. I might as well just give it all at the same time.”

A hands on artist, DeMarco even designed the album cover himself saying, “it’s a self-portrait.  And that’s essentially what ‘One Wayne G’ is, you know, five years of me.”

“One Wayne G.” comes only three months after the release of his instrumental album “Five Easy Hot Dogs” that was recorded while on a road trip.

Speaking on the album DeMarco said, “people are making music for TikTok or really short songs and there’s like 9,000 writers on a pop song. It’s very single-driven. So, I was like, ‘Well, I’m going to put out like nine hours and most of it won’t have song titles. It will just have dates.”

Recording full albums, writing the songs himself, and playing multiple instruments is not the only things that make DeMarco an “old school” artist…he also prefers to use the old analog equipment instead of the new digital recording equipment.  However the new album is not being released in a physical format…only digital.

DeMarco notes that he is forever moving forward and has no desire to remake the same stuff over and over again saying, “I’ve made a bunch of records that have made me enough money to live comfortably and like, I’m in a position where I can make the art that I want to make.  I don’t know, I just enjoy —I love music. Music is cool.”

The Canadian native is a bit of a minimalist when it comes to needs and habits saying, “I don’t like being beholden to things like that, you know? As humans, we got to have water, you got to have shelter, you got to have food. That’s enough things to be trapped by.”

He hasn’t quite figured out all of the details yet, but for his next album DeMarco wants to use his motorcycle.
