Tonight on “American Idol” the remaining singers will in an Idol first take on the music of British rockers Coldplay with lead singer Chris Martin serving as mentor for the contestants.

Continuing the multiple eliminations, tonight two more singers will be eliminated.

Casey Bishop gets the night of music started off with a performance of “Paradise”. Chris Martin told her to exist inside the song and not worry about what anyone thinks. Katy said that it was great to see Casey cut loose and harness the energy. Luke noted that he has never heard Casey deliver a bad note in the competition. Lionel said Casey was fantastic.

Next up is Chayce Beckham chose to sing a song he loved – “Magic”. Martin said that he forgot to mentor Chayce and just played along. Luke said that Chayce did a great job; adding that he has so many artistic moments in his performances. Lionel said that half of game was to have confidence and the other half was to have fun. Lionel noted that Chayce has a signature voice. Katy said that Chayce has the Chris Martin vibe.

Willie Spence sang “Yellow”. Willie grew up singing in the church; Chris Martin revealed that he grew up singing in the church too – a very strict English church. When Willie said that he has some insecurities, Martin said he did too; especially after hearing Willie sing. Lionel noted that Willie took a Chris Martin song and made it a Willie Spence song. Katy said that when Willie sings, it’s amazing; adding that Chris Martin helped Willie soar. Luke said that he will treasure all of the times he has gotten to see Willie sing. Luke wants to add some episodes so he can hear Willie sing more.

Country singer Caleb Kennedy puts his own country spin on “Violet Hill”. Martin revealed that this was the first Coldplay song ever. When Caleb played a song he had written for Chris Martin, Martin was impressed. Katy said that she has never had a Coldplay song scare her, but that one did…in a good way. Luke told Caleb to never say he isn’t a singer because he is a singer and a songwriter. Lionel agreed with Luke and reminded Caleb that the audience isn’t at the rehearsals so to remember to bring it on the stage.

Host Ryan Seacrest announced that the search for the 2022 edition of “American Idol” has begun.

Arthur Gunn chose one of Coldplay’s early songs with the Grammy Award winning song “In My Place”. Noting that music is like water flowing, Chris Martin was very open to the singers re-arranging his songs. He told Arthur that he has to do what he thinks is right. Luke noted that Arthur walks to the beat of his own drum…adding that it was cool. Luke said that he loved the vocals on the song. Lionel called Arthur a treasured soul; adding that he is an artist. Katy said that Arthur sound good like it was at his show; but would have like to sing along but didn’t know the melody.

Grace Kinstler couldn’t decide which song to perform and got a little help from Chris Martin on her song choice. Chris said that he could never win “American Idol” but he would love being vulnerable. Grace chose to sing “Fix You”. Lionel noted that Grace’s flaws are her magic; adding that it was the part that makes entertainment. Katy said that Grace has finally arrived with that song. Luke said that he was pumped up with the performance; adding that he almost said a really bad word on TV.

The top five will be entering the studio to perform a single and they will be mentored by award winning producer Jinneas.

Last up is Hunter Metts who chose to sing “Everglow” – song Martin said was written after listening to a lot of Bonnie Raitt. Chris Martin said that Hunter is another one who didn’t need mentoring, just sit and listen. Katy noted that she gets so many texts about Hunter. She said that Hunter is beloved. Luke said that it was amazing seeing Hunter on stage; adding that he has a unique voice. Lionel noted that Hunter is a storyteller with a unique voice; adding that the sky is the limit.

In a debut performance Coldplay performed their new single “Higher Power”.

Performing two songs tonight, the singers return for a round of “Mother’s Day” songs.

Casey Bishop returns for a performance of “Ironic” by Alanis Mofrisette. Casey had the judges out of their chairs dancing during the performance. Luke said that it was fun watchig her. Lionel said that the song choice and stage presence were right on the money. Katy told Casey to keep bringing that kind of stage presence.

Ryan Seacrest revealed that the voting was really close tonight.

Chayce Beckham returns to perform an original song that he wrote for his mom – “”Mama”. Lionel said that Chayce had him crying. Lionel told Chayce to put the song out now..it is a hit! Katy called Chayce sensitive and vulnerable and gave him an A+. Luke said it was the right song on the right night. Chayce had everyone tearing up…including himself.

Willie Spence sings the Joe Cocker song “You Are So Beautiful” for his mom. On a video, his mom was in tears. Katy said that she has never heard the song performed like that; adding that it was very connected. Luke noted that Willie has so many amazing qualities in his voice. Lionel said that the way Willie navigates the notes is beautiful; adding that he Williezied the song.

Caleb Kennedy returns with an original song for his mom – “Mama Said”. Luke called Caleb a true anomoly; writing songs that sound like they were written by a 50 year old man, not a 15 year old. Calling Caleb gifted, Lionel told Caleb to put the song out right now. Katy said that wearing his heart on his sleeve was awesome.

Arthur Gunn performs the Lynyrd Skynyrd song “Simple Man” for his mom. Lionel called Arthur a stylist and has a signature sound. Katy said that she connected with Arthur; adding that the song was great for his voice. Luke reminded Arthur that things are getting tough and to bring it every time.

Grace Kinstler sang one of her mom’s favourtie songs – “When e Were Young” by Adele. Katy said that she was proud of Grace tonight; adding that she has stepped up her game. Luke called it magical…like a movie. Lionel said that it was perfectly done; adding that the delivery was right on point.

Closing out the night of music, Hunter Metts performs a personal request from his mom – his original song “The River”. Luke called the performance incredible; adding that all of the original songs tonight were amazing. Lionel said that Hunter has drifted into professional status. Katy applauded Hunter and all of the original songs.

And finally it is time for the resutls that will reveal the final five…
