Normally a Sunday off for Mother’s DAy, the NASCAR Cup Series caps off a triple header weekend of throwback racing at Darlington Raceway. The drivers are sporting tribute paint schemes from various racing series. Even the Goodyear tires have a lok from the past in this Goodyear 400.

This marks the 12th – the one third mark – race of the season.

AT 85 degrees air temperature, it is the hottest day of the season for the drivers.

If Kyle Busch leads just nine laps, he will reach a major milestone of having led 18,000 laps in his racing career.

Chase Elliott will have to start the race from the back of the field after the crew made some unapproved adjustments to the number nine car – removing a packer. Aric Almirola will also have to start from the back of the field after his number 10 car failed the pre-race inspection process twice.


Brad Keselowski sits on the pole for the second week in a row and will bring the field to green with Kevin Harvick starting alongside on the front row.

Motown legend Smokey Robinson performed the National Anthem before the race. The rendition also included a portion of “America the Beautiful”.

Mothers of NASCAR Hall of Famers gave the command to start the engines for today’s race.

NASCAR legends Bill Elliott and Leonard Wood are pacing the field today.

Stages one of the race is 90 laps in length with stage two lasting 95 laps and stage three lasting 108 laps for a total of 293 laps around the mile and a third track.

NASCAR has called for a competition caution of lap 30. With no practice or qualifying this season, NASCAR has been adding a competition caution in the races. Drivers may make pit stops prior to the competition caution but cannot fuel the cars.

Brad Keselowski brings the field down for the green flag start of the race from the inside lane and jumps out in front of Kevin Harvick for the lead.

Lap two, the top five are Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr, and William Byron.

Tyler Reddick has earned his “Darlington stripe” early when he brushed the wall on lap one.

Aric Almirola brings out the first caution flag of the race on lap seven after a big hit to the inside wall after contact from Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The whole front end of the number 10 car has some heavy damage.

Lap 15, Brad Keselowski is falling through the field with reports of the splitter hitting the track. He is currently in ninth place.

Lap 16, the top five are Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr, Kevin Harvick, Tyler Reddick, and Denny Hamlin.

Aric Almirola is out of the race.

Lap 17, Chase Elliott enters the top 20.

Lap 21, Kyle Busch has a third of a second lead on team mate Martin Truex Jr; Kevin Harvick, Tyler Reddick, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five.

Lap 23, Kyle Busch brings out the caution flag when he spins out with a flat tire. Martin Truex Jr is the new leader. Busch was just one lap shy of leading 18,000 laps.

The tires that came off of Kyle Busch’s car was severely corded.

Kevin Harvick reports that his car has no grip and will not turn.

NASCAR has named this as the competition caution.

Most of the field is single file and riding near the wall on the high line.

Lap 36, William Byron gets loose when he tries to pass Austin Dillon. Byron saved the car.

Lap 37, Martin Truex Jr ahs a lead of over half a second on Kevin Harvick; Tyler Reddick, Joey Logano, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five.

Lap 45, halfway through stage one, Martin Truex Jr has pulled out to a lead of over two seconds on Tyler Reddick; Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, and Joey Logano round out the top five. Kyle Busch is up to 22nd place

Kyle Larson is reporting a very loose condition and is in seventh place.

Brad Keselowski is back in 18th place.

Lap 50, Chase Elliott is just outside the top 10 in twelfth place.

Cole Custer is driving the “Happy Mother’s Day” car.

With 36 laps remaining in stage one, Martin Truex Jr has increased his lead to three and a half seconds on Denny Hamlin; Tyler Reddick, Kevin Harvick, and Joey Logano round out the top five.

Drivers begin the cycle of green flag pit stops. Drivers are reporting very slick conditions on the track and no grip.

FOX Sports broadcaster Jeff Gordon reports that the track temperature is 132 degrees.

The teams have only 10 sets of tires for todays race.

Ross Chastain leads the race, he has yet to make his pit stop. There are only 12 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 70, the top five are Ross Chastain, Martin Treux Jr, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, and Tyler Reddick.

Lap 72, Martin Truex Jr passes Ross Chastain to retake the lead. Chastain has dropped to third place on old tires.

With 15 laps remaining in stage one, Martin Truex Jr has a two second lead on Denny Hamlin; Kevin Harvick, Tyler Reddick, and Kyle Larson round out the top five. Ross Chastain continues to drop through the field on old tires after not making his pit stop.

Drivers are getting three wide across the track.

There are 19 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 78, Denny Hamlin has closed the gap on leader Martin Truex Jr to under a second.

Lap 83, Martin Truex Jr has increased his lead on Denny Hamlin to over a second; Kevin Harvick, Tyler Reddick, and Kyle Larson round out the top five. Kyle Busch is back on the lead lap in 17th place. Brad Keselowski and Bubba Wallace battle for the “lucky dog” spot.

Five to go, Martin Truex Jr has a 1.25 second lead on Denny Hamlin with Kevin Harvick in third over six seconds back; Tyler Reddick and Kyle Larson round out the top five.

Cole Custer hits the wall hard on lap 99 and brings out the fourth caution flag. Custer hit the inside wall in the same spot as team mate Aric Almirola earlier in the race after Alfredo and Quin Houff had some on track contact. But unlike Almirola, Custer’s car came off the ground. Anthony Alfredo and Cole Custer made contact before the wreck. Alfredo also has some damage to his car.

Martin Truex Jr brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 105 from the inside lane and gets out in front for the lead.

The top five are Martin Truex Jr, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Tyler Reddick, and Kevin Harvick. Kyle Busch is in the top 10.

The caution flag comes out on lap 107 when Kurt Busch hits the inside wall on the front stretch. There are flames coming out from under his car. Busch and Bubba Wallace were racing for the “lucky dog” position at the time of the wreck.

Since he was a part of the wreck that caused the caution, Bubba Wallace did not get the “lucky dog”.

Lap 120, Joey Logano takes second from Denny Hamlin with Martin Treux Jr out in front by nearly two seconds.

Lap 122, there are 17 cars on the lead lap with three drivers out of the race after hard crashes.

Lap 125, Martin Truex Jr has a lead of two and a half seconds on Joey Logano; Kyle Busch, William Byron, and Tyler Reddick round out the top five. Denny Hamlin has fallen to sixth place on old tires.

Lap 128, Martin Truex Jr continues to increase his lead, which is now over three seconds.

Alex Bowman and Ryan Blaney make contact in a battle for position, but he track stays green.

Lap 136, Martin Truex Jr has a lead of nearly four seconds on Joey Logano; Kyle Busch, William Byron, and Tyler Reddick round out the top five.

Lap 139, Martin Truex Jr’s lead is now approaching five seconds on Joey Logano.

Lap 157, Martin Truex Jr is “driving it like he stole it” with a lead of over five and a half seconds on William Byron; Kyle Busch, Joey Loganom, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five.

Truex continues to increase his lead; on lap 161, he has a lead of over seven seconds on William Byron.

Lap 164, Martin Truex Jr has now pulled out to a lead of over eight seconds on Kyle Busch; William Byron, Joey Logano, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five.

With 10 laps to go, Martin Truex Jr has led 130 laps so far. He now has an eleven second win on team mate Kyle Busch.

FOX Sports reports that to date no driver that has won a stage, has also won the race…nor has any driver that has lead the most laps. Truex has done both today so far.

Six laps remain in stage two; Martin Treux Jr has a lead of nearly 13 seconds on Kyle Busch with 16 cars on the lead lap.

Four to go, Martin Truex’s lead is now 13 and a half seconds on Kyle Busch.
