On May 4 New York City firefights answered a three-alarm fire at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre – the home of the long running musical “The Book of Mormon”. Confined to the fourth floor of the theatre, the electrical fire caused significant damage that has required AGT Entertainment to close the theatre while repairs are made.
ATG Entertainment (the owner of the theater) has stated that the Theatre will be closed until May 17.
Anyone who has purchased a ticket during the closed dates will be notified by their point of purchase and will have the option of getting a refund or rescheduling for a new show date once the show has re-opened.
ATG Entertainment and “The Book of Mormon” issued a joint statement saying, “ATG Entertainment and ‘The Book of Mormon’ are currently working with a team of industry professionals to begin repairs needed to the building.”
The added, “their deepest thanks to the firefighters and emergency responders for their bravery and speedy response.”
The cause of the fire is still unknown but began in the electrical room where lighting equipment and dangling chandeliers are stored.
In addition to the fire damage, there is also some water damage after dousing the fire.
With over 5,000 performances, “The Book of Mormon” currently sits in 10th place of the longest running shows on Broadway.
The Eugene O’Neill Theatre opened in 1925. Among its numerous performances have been “Sweeney Todd”, “Cat on a Hot Tim Roof”, and “Spring Awakening”.
