‘The Book of Mormon’ Closes…Temporarily

“The Book of Mormon” recently celebrated its 15^th anniversary on Broadway; but a three alarm fire on May 4 has caused the musical to close its doors temporarily to make repairs to the theatre.

While the damage is limited to the roof and fourth floor that has “substantial damage” – where the lighting equipment and hanging chandeliers are kept.

Fortunately, there was no one in the building when the fire broke out.  The New York City Fire Department reported only one “minor injury” to one of the firefighters.

ATG Entertainment (owners of the Eugene O’Neill Theatre) issued a statement on Monday evening announcing the closure of the theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday (May 5 & 6) but have not announced when they plan to reopen the long running musical.

“The Book of Mormon” currently ranks number 10 in the longest running shows on Broadway with over 5,000 performances.

In a list of Broadway productions that have made at least 1,000 performances – not counting the previews -, “The Phantom of the Opera” continues to top the list; but a new Opera Ghost has arrived in New York City in a new musical that has extended the show’s run several times.
