This week the 30 owners in Major League Baseball have been meeting in Orlando. Part of those meetings have been a number of trades and the Rule Five Draft.
A total of 13 Major League players were drafted – 12 of them were right-handed pitchers. The Minnesota Twins selection of catcher Daniel Susac from the Athletics was the only exception. There were 55 AAA players drafted for a total of 68 players changing teams – 15 short of last year’s record 83.
In the Rule Five Draft, teams must in essence “buy” the player by paying $100,000 to draft the player and that player must be a part of the Major League roster the following season. The player must clear waivers and be offered back to the original team for half the drafting price before he can be sent down to the Minor Leagues.
A AAA player only cost a team $24,000 with no restrictions.
