Professional wresting has often been referred to as “fake” and “not real” wrestling.
On November 13, in a very limited engagement, “Dubbo Championship Wrestling” is coming to Broadway.
Starring Natalie oy Johnson, Janine LaManna, and Justin Matthew Sargent the musical tells the story of an angry you high school student who picks a fight with the wrong person. Sent back home in rural area, she must fight for the struggling family business – Dubbo Championship Wrestling.
Written by Daniel and James Cullen, the musical is directed by Will Nunziata.
David Cullen spoke on the musical via statement saying, ”I have always loved professional wrestling, and its pageantry and melodrama make it a natural fit for musical theatre. In terms of looking like you’re about to burst into song, I consider pro wrestlers up there with Mormons, and the performers are just as bizarre as their in-ring personas. While the core theme is ‘home is where the heart is,’ the show explores ideas of identity, reality, and wrestling’s checkered history with race.”
Performances are November 13 to 15 only at the A.R.T/ New York Theatres. The production is a part of the “Dare to Be Different” series.
Douglas Goodhart, Loren Lester, Susie Mosher, Gabriella Palminteri, and Cole Thompson also appear in the musical.
In 2024, “Dubbo Championship Wrestling” was presented the Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists.
Tickets are just $20 and available at http://www.amasmusical.org.
