The Cup Series caps off the triple header weekend of road course racing with the Go Bowling at the Glen in central New York at Watkins Glen International.
The 2.45 mile course doesn’t have the “turtles” seen at many tracks; but does have some very colourful rumble strips that the drivers routinely cross over. Painted in the primary colours of red, blue, and yellow; they are hard to miss.
Unlike the Truck and Xfinity Series, the Cup drivers have been divided into two groups for two 25 minute practice sessions before making a qualifying run.
In a rare event for the Cup Series, they are fielding a full lineup of 40 drivers this weekend. Included in the lineup is Xfinity Series driver Connor Zilisch who is running all three series this weekend.
With Connor Zilisch and Shane van Gisbergen in group 1, Justin Haley topped the leaderboard in group 1 practice with teammate Michael McDowell just one thousandth of a second behind.
Practice speeds in group 2 are much slower than those from group 1. Chase Briscoe leads group 2 practice but is back in number ninth place overall.
Overall, Cup Series practice times are slower than those run by the Xfinity Series in practice and qualifying.
The drivers are in two groups for qualifying with a 20 minute session.
With a time of 71.960 seconds, Ryan Blaney puts his number 12 car on the pole with Shane van Gisbergen starting alongside on the front row. This is the 150th pole for Team Penske.
