On April 22, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame revealed the 2024 class of inductees into the Hall of Fame.  The list covers artists from rock to Hip-Hop.  The new class will be officially inducted  October 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland.

Five of the 16 inductees are women with five groups across the three categories.

In the performance category Mary J Blige, Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool  the Gang, The Dave Matthews Band, peter Frampton, and Ozzy Osbourne have been selected.

This will be the second induction for shock rocker Ozzy Osbourne who has been inducted as a member of his band Black Sabbath.

Four of the inductees were on the ballot for the first time – Cher, Foreigner,  Peter Frampton and Kool & the Gang.

Alexis Korner, John Mayall, and Big Mama Thornton will be inducted in the Musical Influence Award category with Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick, and Norman Whitfield will be inducted under the Musical Excellence Award category.  Music executive Suanne de Passo is being presented the Ahmet Ertegun Award.

Speaking on the new class of inductees, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation John Sykes said, “Rock ‘n’ Roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations.  This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”

While Barbra Streisand has an album on the chart in each of the pas six decades; Cher is the only artist to reach the number one song in each of the last six decades.

An artist becomes eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after their first commercial release.  Inductees are selected by the artists, music historians, and music industry professionals that comprise the more than 1,000 members of the selection committee.  Fans were also allowed to cast their votes but the total votes only count as one vote to join the selection committee.

Artists inducted under the Performance category have created music that has originality, impact, and influence; along with changing the course of rock and roll.

The Musical Influence inductees are artists whose music and performance style directly influence and inspire; they have evolved both rock and roll and have impacted youth culture.

The Musical Excellence Award is given to artists, musicians, songwriters, and producers who have had a dramatic impact on music through their originality and creative influence.

The Ahmet Ertegun Award is a non-performance award that is presented to a single industry profession that has had a major influence on the creative development and growth of rock and roll and its impact on culture.

Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Sinead O’Connor, Sade, Oasis, Eric B. & Rakim, and Jane’s Addiction were also nominated but failed to make the list.
