It has been a wild ride for the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays over the past few days with plenty of home runs, a busted Maple Leaf sign, and a suspended player.

On Tuesday (May 16) night New York Yankee pitcher Domingo German was ejected from the game for having a foreign substance.  On Wednesday, Major League Baseball suspended German for 10 games.

A starting pitcher, Germain will only miss a couple of starts.

German was suspended in the fourth inning for what the umpire described as “the stickiest hand I’ve ever felt.”  Crew chief James Hoye added, “my fingers had a hard time coming off his palm.”  Exactly what the “sticky substance” was not revealed; but the only substance allowed for use by pitchers is the MLB provided rosin found on the mound.  He retired nine batters before being ejected from the game.

German denies any use of a foreign substance saying only that he used the offered rosin…and sweat.

German has not appealed the penalty and will began his suspension on Wednesday night and will return to the team on May 28 when the Yankees face the San Diego Padres.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke on the suspension saying, “he went over the line that umpires deemed and now we’ve got to live with the consequences of that.  No one player needs to carry this load. We’ll share it all and we’ll do it together.”

Currently on the injured reserve list, pitcher Luis Severino is expected to be activated and will fill in during German’s suspension.

In the two years since MLB has been cracking down on pitchers using foreign substances, four players have been suspended for suspected prohibited substances.
