It has been nearly 30 years since NASCAR has raced on the track at North Wilkesboro; but thanks to people like Dale Earnhardt Jr and Marcus Smith, the track has been reconstructed and rebuilt for a “Back to the Future” experience.  The track remains the same but the fan amenities have been updated and modernized.

This week the drivers get a full 40 minute practice session instead of the shortened 20 minutes fans have been seeing over the past few years.

A total of 40 teams brought trucks to North Wilkesboro to fill 36 spots.  Among the drivers are Cup Series regulars William Byron, Christopher Bell, Bubba Wallace, Ross Chastain, and Kyle Larson.  There are 22 drivers on the entry list who were not even born the last time a NASCAR race was held at North Wilkesboro.

When Goodyear held a tire test a few weeks ago there was a good bit of fall off on the tires.  Track officials has since done some repaving and the crews are not seeing as much of a fall off.  The teams have a total of seven sets of tires for the weekend – one for practice, one for qualifying (drivers will start the race on the qualifying tires), and five sets of tires for the race.

Norm Benning got into the wall during practice and did significant damage to his truck.

Doing a double this weekend, this is the 199th different track that Kyle Larson has raced on.

Something broke on Akinori Ogata’s truck and burst into flames.  Ogata got out of the truck safely and walked away from the truck.  Ogata’s truck was smoking heavily and then burst into flames; FOX broadcasters suspect an oil line busted.

On Saturday morning, Christopher Bell is the first driver on the track to make a qualifying run and set a time of 20.350 seconds around the track.

After failing the inspection process three times, Zane Smith will not make a qualifying run and have to start the race from the back of the field.

In his first qualifying run in a truck this season, Kyle Larson makes a time of 20,279 seconds to put his number seven truck at the top of the board after nine trucks have made a qualifying attempt.

Bret Holmes puts his 32 truck at the top of the board with a time of 20.271 seconds.

Colby Howard puts down a time of 20.270 seconds to put his number nine truck at the top of the leaderboard.

The 98 truck of Ty Majeski moves to the top of the leaderboard with a time of 20.198 seconds.

After leading practice on Friday, Carson Hocevar posted a time of 20.156 to put his number 42 truck at the top of the leaderboard.

Making just a single lap, Corey Heim puts his number eleven truck at the top with a time of 20.072 seconds to win the pole.  Carson Hocevar will start alongside on the front row.
