After all of the controversy over the weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway due to a malfunctioning curb barrier, NASCAR issued only two penalties – one in the Cup Series and one in the Xfinity Series.

In the Cup Series, officials found an improperly secured lug nut on the Team Penske number 12 car driven by Ryan Blaney. As a result, crew chief Todd Gordon was fined $10,000 for the infraction. The penalty does not affect Blaney’s second place finish in the Verizon 200 at The Brickyard.

In the Xfinity Series, NASCAR officials issued a severe penalty when they suspended the crew chief for the RSS Racing number 39 car driven by Ryan Sieg. Shane Wilson has been suspended for four races due to a violation of the NASCAR rule book regarding a safety violation during the road course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. Prior to Wilson taking over the crew chief duties in May, Kevin Starland was the crew chief for the number 39 car; he will reclaim those duties in Wilson’s absence.

NASCAR did not cite the specific violation but noted that the rule book states, a safety violation may be imposed for any action or omission by a Competitor or vehicle that creates an unsafe environment or poses a threat to the safety of the Competitors, as determined by NASCAR.”
