Last week on “American Idol” fans voted for their top five favourites from the top seven singers. But this week the five have become four after 16 year old Country singer Caleb Kennedy was dismissed after a video appeared demonstrating some questionable content.

On semi finals night the remaining four singers will perform three songs – songs written by their own idols, an original singles round, and a favourite past performance. The singers also pair up for duets of a Finneas song.

Award winning producer Finneas is mentoring the singers this week.

First up is Chayce Beckham who got to play one of his original songs for Finneas. Finneas told Chayce to focus on his voice. Chayce sang “Colder Weather” by the Zac Brown Band.

Katy said that Chayce was born on “American Idol”. She called Chayce’s guitar his ammunition. Luke said that Chayce is there because he is “real”; adding that people love authentic and genuine. Lionel said that Chayce earned the right to have everyone like him. Host Ryan Seacrest said when he stands next to Chayce, he realizes how much coolness he doesn’t have.

Casey Bishop chose to perform a song by mentor Finneas’ sister Billie Eilish; one that Finneas co-wrote with Billie. Finneas told her to sing as if she had just thought of the lyrics just before she walked out on the stage. Casey chose “wish you were gay”. Luke said that Casey crushed it; adding it was her best performance yet and a perfect song choice. Lionel noted that Casey has been pushing it all season; telling her to own her persona; adding that she killed it. Katy said that Casey found her star dust.

The 2019 Idol winner Layne Hardy returns to the Idol stage to promote his new music.

Grace Kinstler chose a song by original Idol winner Kelly Clarkson – “A Moment Like This” – for her idol song. Finneas told her to just fall in love with the song. Lionel noted that Grace is bringing who she is to the stage. Katy noted that her cousins wanted Grace to win; adding it was a great song choice. Luke said that all four of the finalists are super stars.

Closing out round one is Willie Spence with a song by John Legend. Finneas said that Willie has one of the best voices he has ever heard. Finneas said that Willie has a powerful voice. Willie sang the Academy Award winning song “Glory”. Lionel keps saying “oh my god”. Katy said that she was glad Willie took them to church. Luke wanted to talk to Willie for three minutes…but he couldn’t. Luke said that Willie will save people’s lives that his voice; adding that the performance was amazing. Lionel said that Willie has a stellar persona; adding that he uplifts and moves people.

Ryan Seacrest noted that the voting is close again this week.

Taking a break from the competition, this week’s mentor Finneas and Ashe take the stage for a performance of “Til Forever Falls Apart”.

In round two, the singers pick one of their favourite performances from the season to sing and perform their original song.

Chayce Beckham returns to sing his original song “23” and “You Should Probably Leave” by Chris Stapleton. Luke asked how do they create another way to say great job; adding that it felt like a real concert. Lionel said that from the beginning to now it has been a complete turn around; adding that everything is lining up for number one in show business. Katy asked Chayce where his song is on the chart. Chayce said that it is number one on the Country chart.

Casey Bishop returns for her original single “Love Me, Leave Me” and her original audition song “Live Wire” by Motley Crue. Lionel kept asking what??? Lionel loved the performance; adding that he wants front row seats and back stage passes. Katy said that her favourite song right now is “Love Me, Leave Me”. Kath said that Casey checks all the boxes. Luke noted that they were only two miles from all the bars where the 80’s hair bands played.

Willie and Grace pair up for a performance of “What They’ll Say About Us” – a song he began writing while Nick Cordero was still alive and completed after his death. Finneas said that if he had known about Grace and Willie’s voices when he wrote the song, he would have given it to them.

Judge Luke Bryan takes the stage to perform his new single “Waves”.

Idol alum Michael J Woodard returns to the Idol stage to promote his new music. He said that after the show, Katy signed him.

Grace Kinstler performs her original song “Love Someone” and “Father” by Demi Lovato. Luke said that it was a great performance. Lionel noted that it is clear that the birds are about to leave the nest. Katy said it was a great first song.

Willie Spence returns to debut his single “Never Be Alone” and a performance of Beynce’s “I Was Here”. Lionel asked what have we done; saying that he wants to see the tour. Lionel called Willie a giant of a voice and talent. Katy said that she gets chills when Willie performs; adding it was a great original song. Katy said that Willie is walking in the light. Luke said that Willie is like a teddy bear…until the lights come up.

Ryan said that he wishes they could have four winners.

For the final performance of the night Casey and Chayce take the stage to perform the Finneas song “Break My Heart Again”. Finneas told them that he was listening to a lot of Frank Sinatra the summer he wrote the song; adding that they could take melodic liberties with the song.

Ryan said that it has been amazing watching the four of them perform; adding that he thinks it is the best final four they have ever had.
