The Drama League has released the 2021 nominees for their annual awards and Special Recognition Recipients.
In this year of Coid, theatres have been closed down; but for the 87th annual awards, the Drama League is including audio plays and virtual concerts in the productions up for nomination. The League has also added five new categories this year to accommodate the digital productions designed to promote safety via social distancing.
Drama League Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks spoke on the awards ceremonies saying, “in this most difficult time, when stages across America were forced to darken, theatre artists responded with light, producing bold new work in ways most of us never dreamed of. Thanks to the artists who are alumni of The Drama League’s programs, we’re thrilled to be able to celebrate a few of the extraordinary productions made in the last year—pieces that exemplify inspiration, innovation, and imagination”.
Thirty-three productions were selected for nomination out of over 400 entries.
The winners will be announced May 21, 2021 in a live streamed event beginning at 7pm.
Among the productions included in this year’s nominees are “The Last Five Years”, “Circle Jerk”, “Heroes of the Fourth Turning”, and “Ratatouille: The Tik Tok Musical”.
