The time has finally arrived and after a 50 year lapse, the NASCAR Cup Series will race on the dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Heavy rains and flooded parking lots postponed the highly anticipated race and cancelled all of the qualifying heat races.

The last time the Cup Series ran a race on the dirt it was 1970 with “The King” Richard Petty taking the checkered flag.

In a rare occasion for the 2021 racing season the drivers got some practice time on the track. After that practice, NASCAR made a few changes to the racing format which will increase the competition caution from one to two and has changed the lengths of the stages. Stages one are two were originally set for 75 laps each; they will now be 100 laps each with stage three lasting only 50 laps. There will be a competition caution at the halfway point in stage one and in stage two.

The teams are also being given more tires after officials noted the tire wear during the two practice sessions. Drivers must start the race on the same set of tires they used during practice on Friday and will have an additional five sets of tires in their pits.

Due to the cancellation of the qualifying races, the field was set by the NASCAR rule book. Kyle Larson is set to sit on the pole for the Food City Dirt Race; however, after the number five team made an engine change after Friday’s practice, Larson will have to start the race from the back of the field.

Michael McDowell and Matt DiBenedetto will also have to move to the back of the field after making unapproved adjustments to their cars.

After running 150 laps in his number 52 truck, Stewart Friesen is making his Cup Series debut in a racing doubleheader.
