After serving as host for the competition dance reality show “Dancing with the Stars”, Tom Bergeron will not be returning to the show when it returns.
Bergeron and his co-host Erin Andrews did not have their contracts renewed and have essentially been fired from the show.
Bergeron has hosted the show for all 28 seasons; while Andrews, who has been on the show for 10 seasons, is Bergeron’s fourth co-host. Andrews, a sportscaster, was a contestant before joining the show as a co-host.
Bergeron broke the news to fans via Twitter saying, “just informed @DancingABC will be continuing without me. It’s been an incredible 15 year run and the most unexpected gift of my career. I’m grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made. That said, now what am I supposed to do with all of these glitter masks?”.
ABC and BBC issued a statement on their decision saying, “Tom Bergeron will forever be part of the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ family. As we embark on a new creative direction, he departs the show with our sincerest thanks and gratitude for his trademark wit and charm that helped make this show a success. Erin will also not be returning, and we appreciate all that she brought to the ballroom. Fans have been rooting for her since she originally competed as a contestant back in 2010, and her signature sense of humor has become a hallmark of the show.”
In recent years, ABC has been criticized by fans for their choices of younger lesser known “celebrities”, polarizing politicians, and “has-beens” as their choice of contestants on the show. The decision to oust Bergeron and Andrews is also drawing some ire from longtime DWTS fans.
