This weekend the Monster Energy Cup Series goes short track racing in Thunder Valley with the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Three time Cup champion and FOX broadcaster Darrell Waltrip holds the record for winning seven Bristol races in a row; he has a total of 12 wins at the half mile track.

After the first round of qualifying, the top 24 cars were separated by on only two tenths of a second. Ryan Blaney held the top spot with a time of 14.67 seconds.

In round two, Blaney set a new track record of 14.52 seconds around the track; beating the previous record set by Denny Hamlin with a time of 14.57 seconds.

After three rounds of qualifying Chase Elliott wins the pole with a time of 14.56 seconds around the half mile track for his fifth career pole. Team mate William Byron will start alongside Elliott on the front row.

Kevin Harvick’s team encountered a number of issues during pre-race inspection and as a result he will not only be starting the race from the back of the field, but will have to serve a pass through penalty after the team failed the inspection process four times. Engineer Billy Kuebler has also been ejected from the garage.

Stages one and two of the race are 125 laps each with stage three lasting 250 laps for a total of 500 laps around the half mile track.

Darrell Waltrip is in the flag stand to start today’s race with the waving of the green flag and his signature Boogity, bogity, boogity.

Chase Elliott gets out in front for the lead but the caution flag comes out after William Byron and Aric Almirola make contact and sending Almirola into the wall on the first lap. As the cars are slowing down, Ricky Stenhouse Jr hits Kyle Busch and spins him around. Busch is also hit from behind by Ryan Preece.

Chase Elliott is reporting some possible power steering and overheating issues.

Lap 72, Ryan Blaney has pulled out to a lead of over two seconds on Clint Bowyer with 27 cars on the lead lap.

Kyle Larson was charged with having an uncontrolled tire on pit road during his green flag pit stop.

Chase Elliott continues to report power steering and overheating issues. Elliott says that his arms are going to fall off as he muscles the car around the track.

Lap 184, Joey Logano has increased his lead to over three and a half seconds with only 17 cars on the lead lap.

The caution flag came out on lap 213 when Matt Tifft spins out after making contact with Chase Elliott.
