Based on the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat; the musical “Sunday in the Park with George” made it’s Broad way debut in 1984.

The Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning musical is set for a return next summer with Moisés Kaufman as director at the Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.  Performance dates, tickets information, and cast will be announced in the coming months.

BSC Artistic Director Alan Paul spoke on the musical via statement saying, “’Sunday in the Park with George’ is one of the great achievements of the American musical theatre—an exploration of the passion and courage it takes to create something beautiful and lasting.  It reminds us why art matters, and why we devote our lives to making it.”

BSC Executive Director Greg Reiner added, “at Barrington Stage, we approach the great American musicals with the ambition to create definitive productions that audiences will remember for years. “’From On the Town’ to ‘A Chorus Line’, that ambition has helped shape BSC’s national reputation. With Moisés Kaufman, one of the great creative forces in theatre today, and our partners at Tectonic Theater Project, we have an extraordinary opportunity to bring fresh insight and imagination to ‘Sunday in the Park With George’ and make the Berkshires a destination for this landmark musical.”

Moisés Kaufman noted, “to me, ‘Sunday in the Park with George” is the most spiritual show that (Stephen) Sondheim wrote, and my absolute favorite musical in the world.  It is a brilliant, layered meditation on what it costs to create something truly monumental, and it’s just full of grace. A musical like this feels so nurturing at this moment, when we all need it. I am incredibly honored to collaborate with the extraordinary team at Barrington Stage Company to bring this magnificent score and timeless story to vibrant life on stage.”

Hudson Valley Shakespeare is also presenting “Sunday in the Park with George” as a part of their 40th anniversary next summer in an outdoor showing in a special presentation.

Primarily a Shakespearean company, Hudson Valley Shakespeare will run “Sunday in the Park with George” from June 6 to September 4 with Amanda Dehnert directing the production.

Also playing in the upcoming season is “The Cherry Tortured, or the Parable of the Great Unsticking”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and “Macbeth”.
