As artists get older they tend to spend a little more time taking a break by telling stories.

Not so with Jazz artist and guitar virtuoso Pate Metheny.  Now in his early 70’s, the 20 time Grammy Award winner spends nearly every minute of his shows making music; not even stopping to announce the song titles!

Currently on tour, Metheny and his band – Chris, Joe, Leonard, and Luis – made a stop in Buffalo.  Performing at Babeville – a former church purchased  by Ani DiFranco and converted to an entertainment venue – and played before a house filled with music fans who frequently gave praise to the musicians with their applause.

The show began with the band members marching down the aisles on their way to the stage playing drums.

Performing most of the songs on his newest album – “Side Eye III+” – Metheny played for two and a half hours including three encores with no intermission!

He stopped briefly half way through the show to introduce the band and explain the reasoning behind the album’s title.  He had been playing as a trio and realized the new songs he wrote needed more musicians.

Metheny introduced the band members three times during the show and was quick to give praise as each band member had their moments to shine.

The night began with softer tunes that were more toward New Age than Jazz and progresses in style before ending with a funky Progressive rock feel.

Metheny returned to the stage three times for encore performances – twice by himself and once with the band.

It was an absolutely incredible performance that left everyone wanting more.

With over 40 years of music to choose from, there is no way that Pat Metheny could perform everyone’s favourite songs; but I was hoping for some “Last Train Home”  😊
