Once bitter rivals on the baseball diamond, former New York Yankees player Bernie Williams is coming to Broadway to share his Latin Grammy Award nominated talent when he joins the Tony Award winning musical “Buena Vista Social Club”.
An jazz guitarist, Williams is joining the Club band in a limited engagement from October 22 through November 29.
Former New York Mets player José “Candelita” Iglesias joined the cast of “Buena Vista Social Club” on August 27 in what was originally scheduled as a limited engagement as the Narrator; however, Iglesias has extended his engagement to November 15.
While playing professional baseball, many players have “hidden talents” that come to light after their baseball days are over. Iglesias and Williams are making the best of theirs by appearing on America’s other favourite pastime…Broadway.
Williams issued a statement on the upcoming performance saying, “ am excited about the opportunity to join “Buena Vista Social Club” because the music was part of my childhood growing up. I remember my mother listening to this music on Sunday afternoons and it reminds me of wonderful times with my family when I was a kid. The opportunity to play that same music on Broadway in this show is truly a dream come true.”
In other “Buena Vista Social Club” news, television actress Gina Torres is joining the musical as Omara Portuondo in a limited engagement from October 13 to November 29.
Torres is stepping in for the Tony winning original star Natalie Venetia Belcon while Belcon takes a leave of absence to appear “In the Heights”.
“Buena Vista Social Club” debuted in March 2025 and earned eleven nominations at the Tony Awards; taking home five of them.
Telling the story of artists who performed at the original “Buena Vista Social Club”, all of the music is performed in Spanish.
