Probably 99% of my reading is done on my Kindle or the Kindle app; which means when Amazon bundles books they end up being three or four volumes disguised as one book. That can make for some pretty long books of over 1,000 pages.
But there are two books I have read that exceed the 1,000 page mark on their own. Both were written by James Clavell – “Shogun” and “Noble House”. There is a third book “Tai Pan” on my Kindle that is among the many I have yet to read…but will get to eventually. 🙂
“Noble House” weighs in at 1,154 pages! Clavell is very descriptive – something I greatly enjoy. Like Alistair MacLean, he spends pages telling you about the surroundings.
But “Shogun” comes in at a whopping 1,502 pages!
Needless to say, it took a bit of time to get through them.
Both books were made into television mini-series – both of which I also have – and I wanted to know what got left out of the series. There were a few changes like in “Shogun” on the series, Anjin is blinded in the explosion but in the book he is deaf.
And in “Noble House” Ian Dunross is married in the book but not in the series.
But overall, both “Shogun” and “Noble House” follow the books pretty well.
That is often the one thing I see in bad reviews; people don’t want to read about the locations and surroundings where the action is taking place. Don’t get that, but, oh well.
The other major complaint is if a story changes locations multiple times.
Those people must have some very boring books if they only want things to take place in one spot and don’t want to know where it is.
When I see a book that sounds interesting, I read the one star reviews to find out the bad stuff like gory, violent, explicit descriptions, and lots of profanity…not a fan!
It is a rare thing for me to read a book of less than 300 pages. Mostly my books are in the 400 to 500 page range. I like “Star Trek: the Original Series” and the books which frequently run 300 pages or less.
I have a yearly goal of 50 books, unfortunately I am a little behind this year; only 32 so far. 🙁

BE CAREFUL HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE ON YOUR WAY TO THE TOP
Be careful how you treat people while climbing the ladder of success, because you may meet the same people when you are coming back down.
Never look down on people because of their position today.
Never insult those who cannot help you now.
Never treat people badly simply because you think you are better than them.
Life can change quickly. The person you ignore today may become the person you need tomorrow.
Be humble. Be kind. Respect people. Your position may change, but the way you treated people will always be remembered.
