What’s your best tip for budget travel?

When I was little my dad did a good bit of traveling for work. And while he did get peridium, the state of Florida was not known for making the ends meet.

One way he had of saving some money was after checking in to the hotel, he would go to a local market and buy a loaf of bread, jar of peanut butter, a bunch of bananas, and a carton of milk. The bananas and milk were for breakfast. And since the conferences offered coffee and often lunch, he would eat peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. LOL, dad LOVED peanut butter and would be happy with the jar and a spoon!

His frugal efforts at least let him mostly break even and at best save a few dollars and in those days every penny counted.

One big tip is when traveling, look for the local spots – tourist spots are much higher – for eating. Not only can you save money, you get the real experience of the area.

When I was in Russia, we were always in a store or buying food from a kiosk. Whenever we smelled freshly baked bread, a stop was essential and you HAD to buy two loaves (they were kind of small) because you would eat a good bit of one of them while walking back to the dorm. Nothing like freshly baked bread! And at 50 rubles (about a nickel) it was a great deal!

If you are going to be spending more than one night in the same place, go to a local market and purchase a few things for breakfast and snacks. Better yet, bring stuff from home if you can. This is especially true when traveling with children.

Plane travel has gotten rough but driving, taking a bus, or riding the train are more lax when it comes to bringing food. I know someone who travels a lot and drives much of the time; they have a cooler in the back seat packed with food and water; refusing to buy food along the way.

Tourist traps haven’t learned that pricing items a little less expensively would result in a lot more sales and more profit as a result.

A local eating establishment wants over $8 for a hot dog; I can buy a BEEF hot dog for $2.49 at the 7-11 down the block! And it is a very good beef dog too!
