What’s a moment when you realized you were officially an adult?

I suppose the first time I realized that I was honestly no longer a child was the day I cast my first vote in a presidential election.

As a young teen, I did a little work for a local politician that was friends with my dad. Politics was never my thing but I knew how to type and my dad though it would be good for me.

At 18, I registered to vote but seldom took part.

I had a friend who was born in Hungary during World War II – the Germans were bombing the hospital while he was being born! He and his family came here while he was still a baby – his dad was a member of the Hungarian Air Force – and he later became a U.S. citizen. He took the right to vote very seriously and cast his vote in every election, no matter how small. He had little nice to say about people who did not vote but always complained.

But, for me, I have major issues with politicians who campaign on all manner of promises but once in office throw it all away to “look after number one” and are only concerned with whatever benefits them. I refuse to vote for anyone who is only in it for themselves.

The current political climate infuriates me and I am glad that I didn’t add to the catastrophe that is the U.S. government. Sure there are people who would say I should have voted because every vote counts, but I haven’t seen much to make me believe any of it matters.

I sometimes wonder if being an adult is really all it is made up to be.
