The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certifies singles and albums with gold, platinum, multi-platinum, and Diamond awards depending on record sales. A Diamond award is given for an album that sells 10 million copies within the United States.
Earlier this year, the RIAA awarded the Eagles the first ever Quadruple Diamond award for selling 40 million copies of their “Greatest Hits 1971-1975” album – the most of any other artist.
Their album “Hotel California” sits in third place – Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” holds down the second place spot – with 28million albums sold.
Long before it became the best selling album in America, the RIAA presented their first ever platinum album award to The Eagles for “Greatest Hist 1971-1975”.
