It is not unusual to see a Hollywood star play on Broadway; nor is it unusual to see a major sports figure to their hand to starring in the broadcast booth – whether it be radio or tv – once their playing career has ended.

A former sports star starring on Broadway??????
Former Major League Baseball player Jose Igelsias is more than a baseball player; he is also a musician and songwriter who goes by Candelita. Best known for the songs “Tambor” and “OMG”, Iglesias spent his playing days on the field for the Boston Red Sox, the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels, Colorado Rockies, New York Mets, and San Diego Padres.
Now the Cuban born musical baseball player is set to make his Broadway debut next month in the Tony Award winning musical “Buena Vista Social Club” where he will take on the role of the narrator beginning August 27.
Speaking on his upcoming performance, Iglesias spoke via statement saying, “it is an incredible privilege to be part of such a historic band. Anyone who truly knows Cuba understands the journey we have endured, so for me, this is a dream come true. To represent “Buena Vista Social Club” —and to do it on Broadway — is something deeply meaningful and truly special. This musical is unique, powerful, and unlike anything else. On a personal level, it is a tremendous blessing to be part of this production. It is also overwhelming in the best possible way because I will be the first Latino MLB player ever to perform on Broadway. To make that debut in New York City, one of my favorite cities in the world, makes this opportunity even more extraordinary. I cannot wait to experience the energy of that theatre and create unforgettable memories with the cast, the musicians, baseball fans and the theatre audience. The musical tells the story of a night club in Cuba and the musical events that happen there.
