The Second Stage Theater has announced their schedule for the 2026-27 season and two of the five shows will be a part of the Broadway lineup next season at the Hayes Theater; while the remaining three performances will be a part of the Off-Broadway lineup.
When the musical “The Fantasticks” showed on Off-Broadway, the musical set records; come October it will have that chance again…on Broadway!
The newly imagined musical will reveal a gender twist when it premieres at the Hayes Theater beginning October 22.
The original tale was of two fathers who orchestrated the relationship between their children – Matt and Luisa.
In the new version Matt and Luisa are Matt and Lewis and the fathers become mothers.
Tony Award winner Christopher Gattilli will direct and choreograph the production.
The remainder of the Second Stage Theater season will include:
Second Stage Artistic Director Evan Cabnet will direct the Broadway premiere of the Branden Jacobs-Jenkins satirical play “Gloria”. The play is set to begin March 17.
Beginning October 21 The Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center will host the world premiere of the Bryna Turner production “The Visitors”.
Also a world premiere, “Work of Devotion” by Miranda Rose Hall will begin February 3 at The Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center.
The Second Stage Theater will close out their season at The Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center with “how to roll a blunt” by Maomi Lorrain. Beginning April 14, the production will be making its New York debut.
Second Stage Artistic Director Evan Cabnet spoke on the new season via statement saying, “Second Stage Theater has always been the premiere home for contemporary works by both emerging writers and established masters, and this upcoming season is no exception. I am incredibly proud of the five productions we’ll be bringing to life, including two world premiere plays from up-and-coming playwrights whose singular voices constantly surprise, challenge, and move me: Bryna Turner and Miranda Rose Hall; as well as a New York premiere from Naomi Lorrain, whose stunning new play was developed here at Second Stage through our invaluable Judith Champion Reading Series.
