After nearly six years and over 2,000 performances, the Tony Award winning musical “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” has announced that it will give its final performance on July 26.
When the final curtain drops, the show will have given a total of 2,265 regular performances and 24 previews at the Al Hirschfeld theater.
Based on the film by the same name, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” opened to previews on July 25, 2019 and took home the award for Best Musical at the 2020 Tony Awards. The musical was nominated for 14 award and won 10 of them. It has gone on to hold the record for the highest grossing production ever at the Hirschfeld Theater.
The show recouped its investment in 2022. It is the only show that opened in 2019 that is still running and was a pivotal production in helping Broadway to recover after the Covid pandemic shut everything down.
Producer Carmen Pavlovic spoke on the show saying, “it’s truly been the honor of a lifetime bringing this exceptional show to Broadway. We couldn’t have done it without Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin’s trust in allowing us to adapt their iconic film for the stage and for their creative guidance and generosity throughout. Alex Timbers’ vision and leadership, along with the passion and artistry of our entire creative team, has been unmatched. We’ve always said that ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ is a celebration of Broadway and of the artists who, against all odds, make it possible. We look forward to six more months of celebrating the remarkable people who created this show and those who perform eight times a week. And before we take our final bow, we have more exciting announcements that we can’t wait to reveal. See you at the Moulin Rouge, Chickens!”
