The Sting musical “The Last Ship” played a short run on Broadway back in 2014.
Award winning performer Sting and “The Last Ship” will return next summer for a very limited engagement at The Met with Sting reprising his role as Jackie White in a revised version of the musical.
Playing at the Metropolitan Opera House June 9-14, “The Last Ship” performances are a part of a “tour” that includes runs at Amsterdam, Paris, and Brisbane.
The son of a milkman, a young Gordon Sumner grew up in the ship building town of Wallsend on the East Coast of England on the North Sea. Sting used that time to create his musical with long time collaborator Shaggy; who also appears in the show as the Ferryman.
Sting spoke on the musical via statement saying, “I grew up in the shadow of a shipyard, watching thousands of men walk past my front door every morning to work there, and imagining that would be my destiny too. I dreamed of escaping—and I succeeded, traveling far and earning my living on some the world’s greatest stages—including the Metropolitan Opera House in 2010. But the further I got, the more that shipyard called to me. ‘The Last Ship’ is my tribute to the people and the place that shaped me. Bringing it to the Met feels like a full-circle moment.”
An expanded edition of “The Last Ship” soundtrack album is set for a December 5 release and include five new songs.
