Last season Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin beat “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky to set a new scoring record when he made career goal 895.
Last Wednesday night in a game against the St. Louis Blues just 2:39 minutes into the second period, Ovechkin made goal number 900! The Capitals went on to win the game 6-1.
Ovechkin took a rebound from Jakob Chychrun to shoot the goal from the right circle.
The bench cleared to help the 40 year old Ovechkin celebrate the milestone.
Like Shohei Ohtani and the 50/50 Club, Ovechkin is the only member of the new 900 Club.
Ovechkin spoke on the milestone saying, “a couple days ago somebody ask me, ‘Do you think about (900)?’ Of course, it’s huge number, no one ever did it in NHL history and to be the first player to ever do it, it’s a special moment. It’s nice it’s over to get it in the homestand so the fans, my family can be here. It’s pretty cool.”
He added, “I don’t think I have lots of weight on my shoulders, I just try to play game, try to do as best as I can … 13 games, 14 games, you have plenty of games left, of course you’re going to score one goal. “It’s nice to get it.”
Ovechkin is in the final year of his contract with the Capitals.
Over the course of his career, Alex Ovechkin has topped the league in goals nine times and has earned three MVP Awards.
Longtime teammate T.J. Oshie spoke on Ovechkin saying, “even with the slow start here, if someone asks me if he’s going to score 30 this year, I’d say, ‘Yes, guaranteed. He just finds a way to prove people wrong every time people think that he’s down and out. … There’s been plenty of time for me to come to terms with not putting limits on the big man.”
