Earlier this year, NASCAR announced a new street course to replace the Chicago Street Race. But this time it’s something completely different…the Craftsman Truck Series, O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (Xfinity) and the Cup Series will not be racing on just any city streets but on the street of the Naval Base at Coronado in San Diego, California!
The 16-turn 3.4 mile course has been laid out and the information has been declassified for NASCAR to release a virtual view of the course.
The events on June 19 to 21 will also coincide with the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy.
NASCAR San Diego President Amy Lupo spoke on the course saying, “it’s so exciting to finally share the street course layout and provide this first look for our longtime and new fans. Anticipation for this event is already high, and we know this course layout will raise that level of excitement even higher. We can’t wait to see how the best drivers in the world meet this challenge, while celebrating America’s Navy.”
At 3.4 miles, the Navel Base course becomes the longest on the NASCAR circuit. Grandstands and hospitality will be erected throughout the course.
Course highlights include:
- The Ellyson Start/Finish Line: Named in honor of Commander Theodore Ellyson, Naval Aviator Number One. His training at North Island laid the foundation for its commissioning as a naval air station in 1917 and eventual recognition as the “Birthplace of Naval Aviation.”
- Turn 5, Carrier Corner: This sharp left-hand turn is located between the docking location of two aircraft carriers.
- Turn 8, Coronado Chicane: This begins a series of turns that will provide drivers with a steep challenge as they speed toward the interior of the base.
- Turn 14, Runway Road: Aptly named, given it is located near the north end of Runway 18/36 at Halsey Field.
The festivities begin on June 19 with the Navy Community Day to honour the military – this is a closed event, open only to Naval personnel assigned to the Coronado base and a limited number of Coronado Naval Base residents. The evening will conclude with the Craftsman Truck Series race.
On June 20, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series takes the spotlight with the festivities concluding on June 21 with the Cup Series race.
The general public will be allowed on board the base for the races June 20 and 21.
Tickets are currently in pre-sale with tickets going on sale to the general public beginning November 7.
