The Cup Series begins race one in the round of eight with the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
If the winner of the race is one of the playoff drivers, he will become the first driver in the championship four.
There are 38 drivers at Las Vegas for the race including Katherine Legge.
The drivers have been divided into two groups for 25 minutes practice sessions before making a qualifying run.
Melon Man Ross Chastain topped the leaderboard in group one practice as the only driver to run a lap below the 30 second mark.
Justin Haley tops the list in the number of laps run with 40.
The drivers not only have to deal with the track, but the wind as well.
Ross Chastain noted that there was some cording on his tires.
The top seven drivers in group two broke the 30 second mark with Ty Gibbs leading the way.
The wind is proving to be a challenge for the drivers.
The first driver on the track to make a qualifying run is JJ Yeley who posted a time of 30.661 seconds.
Noah Gragson is the first driver to break the 30 second mark with a time of 29.862 seconds around the mile and a half track.
With a time of 29.213 seconds, Denny Hamlin puts his number eleven car on the pole with teammate Chase Briscoe alongside on the front row.

Lap 38, the top eight drivers have yet to make their green flag pit stops. Once pit stops cycle through, William Byron will be the leader.
Lap 41, Todd Gilliland is the new leader.
Lap 42, William Byron is the new leader with Tyler Reddick over half a second back.
Michael McDowell was charged with a commitment cone violation and will have to serve a passthrough penalty.

The wind is considerably calmer than they were on Saturday.

Lap 62, since starting the race from the back of the field, Ross Chastain has not gotten out of the back of the field.
Lap 65, there are 24 cars on the lead lap.
Lap 66, William Byron continues to extend his lead and is now nearly three seconds out in front; Kyle Larson Chase Elliott, and Chase Briscoe round out the top five.
The caution flag comes out on lap 72 when Ryan Blaney gets into the wall with a flat tire. Blaney reports that the steering isn’t right and everything feels like its broken. Blaney is out of the car…and out of the race.
After being blocked by Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin nearly crashed with teammate Christopher Bell.
