Since the current White House administration took over on January 20, 2025; budgets, contracts, and funding have been slashed, revoked, and withheld across every corner of the United States.
As the stack of executive orders pile up, so do the law suits.
The latest law suit came from National Public Radio and its 246 station network, citing the order violates free speech.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has been ordered to cease all funding to NPR radio and PBS television stations. Supporters of the ruling claim the stations promote liberal bias.
Katherine Maher, NPR’s CEO spoke on the lawsuit saying, “by basing its directives on the substance of NPR’s programming, the executive order seeks to force NPR to adapt its journalistic standards and editorial choices to the preferences of the government if it is to continue to receive federal funding.”
NPR, Colorado Public Radio, Aspen Pubic Radio, and KUTE Inc all cite retaliation as the reason for withdrawing funding. The lawsuit further alleges that the administration is “acting to contravene the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private nonprofit corporation set up to distribute federal funding to NPR and PBS, which is intended to insulate the system from political interference.” The Colorado stations receive less than 20 percent of their operating funds from NPR.
Congress is responsible for all funding from the government. Even monies that had already been allocated in a previous budget is being withheld. Congress has appropriated $535 million to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in each of the next three years.
In response to the lawsuit, the White House deputy press secretary Harrison Fields said, “the CPB is creating media to support a particular political party on the taxpayers’ dime, so Trump was exercising his authority under the law. The president was elected with a mandate to ensure efficient use of taxpayer dollars, and he will continue to use his lawful authority to achieve that objective.”
The NPR lawsuit does not include the PBS who says, “PBS is considering every option, including taking legal action, to allow our organization to continue to provide essential programming and services to member stations and all Americans.”
The NPR is just the latest issue between the White House and members of the media. Funding has been withheld from Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty essentially shutting them down. File suits have been filed over on air contact with CBS, “60 Minutes”, and ABC. The White House has restricted access of the Associated Press in the Oval Office; a ruling which has been overturned by the Supreme Court…and ignored.
