The American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League released the annual Tony Award nominations on May 1.  “Buena Vista Social Club”, “Death Becomes Her”, and “Maybe Happy Ending” top the list of nominees with 10 each.  “Dead Outlaw”, “John Proctor is the Villain”, “Sunset Bouevard”, and “The Hills of California” earned seven nominations each with “Floyd Collins”, “Just in Time”, “Purpose”, and “The Picture of Dorian Gray” each earned six. 

Lead actor in the extremely popular play “Good Night, and Good Luck” George Clooney earned his first Tony Award nomination; but award winning actor Denzel Washing and the play “Othello” failed to earn any nominations.  Kit Connor, Rachel Zegler, Robert Downey Jr, Patti LuPone, Idina Menzel, Nick Jonas, Adrienne Warren, and Jake Gyllenhaal also failed to earn any award nominations.

A total of 29 shows earned a nomination in at least one of the 26 Tony Award categories.

The 78th annual Tony Awards will be presented on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall with Cynthia Erivo as host.
