Iconic British musician George Michael died on Christmas Day in 2016 at the age of 53.

Over 30 years after writing and releasing the now Christmas classic “Last Christmas”, the Ivor Novello Awards have nominated Michael for the Most Performed Work award.

Michael wrote and recorded the song as a part of WHAM that has become one of the most played songs during the holiday season when he was just 21 years old.

In 2024, “Last Christmas” landed in the top five at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the number one spot for the second year in a row on the UK Singles Chart.  “Last Christmas” also topped the Billboard Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales charts.

Michael is a six time Ivor Novella Award winner and remains the only artist to receive the Songwriter of the Year award three times!  He is also the youngest artist to win an Ivor Novello at 21 years of age.
