Dale Earnhardt Jr and JR Motorsports was recently involved in a lawsuit with Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson who wants to monopolize the use of the number eight – his jersey number.
While the suit against Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman continues; the suit against Jr has been dropped after JR Motorsports ceased in trying to trademark the old style number eight which is no longer in use.
In light of the law suit, an email was released stating that Talladega Superspeedway was banning the wearing and displaying of the number eight during race activities this weekend as a precaution against legal action.
Talladega has responded saying the email is FAKE!
The email reads as follows:
Title: “Important Update – Temporary Ban on the Number “8” at Talladega”
“Dear Talladega Fans,”
“We hope you’re gearing up for another unforgettable weekend of high-octane racing, Southern hospitality, and the kind of memories only Dega can deliver.”
“However, we need to share an important update regarding a unique and unexpected situation:”
“Effective immediately, Talladega Superspeedway will be temporarily banning the public display of the number “8” on apparel, merchandise and signage within the track grounds.”
“Due to an ongoing and legal dispute between Dale Earnhardt Jr and NFL quarterback Lamar Jackson-involving branding rights, we’ve been advised to take precautionary measures while this matter is sorted out in court.”
“To avoid any legal engagements or potential brand infringement claims, fans are kindly asked to refrain from wearing, waving or displaying the number “8” anywhere on Talladega property until further notice.”
“We understand this may come as a surprise-especially to long-time fans of Dale Jr-and we share your frustration. Justin know this is temporary and it’s all in the interest of avoiding any potential law suits.”
“Thank you for understanding and for continuing to be the heart and soul of Talladega National. We’ll keep you updated as the situation develops-and hopefully, the number ‘8’ will return faster than a green-white-checkered finish.”
Talladega’s response to the fake email, “can’t believe I have to comment this but our marketing department has nothing to do with this…this is fake and was not sent from us.”
