Earning 80.14 percent of the votes needed and 552 points – more than 200 votes ahead of second place – two way player for the Colrado Buffaloes – Travis Hunter – took home the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night.  Hunter’s win marked just the fifth time in the past century that a quarterback did not win the Heisman.

A two way player, Hunter participated in nearly every play of the Buffaloes 9 and 3 season with nearly 700 plays.

Saying that he doesn’t like to stay out late, a smiling Hunter noted, “but I’m going to be out late tonight.”  Hunter planned to celebrate with his Colorado teammates.

Over the past couple of days, Hunter posed for numerous photos with the Heisman trophy but he was very careful not to touch the treasured award saying that he didn’t want to touch it until it was his.  But once his name was called, Hunter eagerly grabbed the trophy saying, “let’s go!”

Hunter is only the second Colorado Buffalo player to win the Heisman Trophy behind Rashaan Salaam who won the award in 1994.

Hunter’s legendary coach is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame; but he never won the Heisman; but Coach Prime’s star player has filled his trophy case over the past few days with top player awards in college football.

During his acceptance speech an emotional Hunter thanked everyone from family to fellow players saying, “never thought I would be in this position.”

He added, “it’s crazy. Belief takes you a long way.”

Head coach Deion Sanders spoke on Hunter saying, “he wants to be great at everything.  He wants to have a commitment to excellence in everything he does — including fishing.”

Boise State quarterback Ashton Jeanty came in second with Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel in third and Miami quarterback Cam Ward coming in fourth.

The Associated Press has also named Hunter as the Player of the Year.

Just missing out on the playoffs after a four way tie, the Colorado Buffaloes will face BYU in the Alamo Bowl where Hunter has vowed to play.  However, he is foregoing his senior year at Colorado to enter the NFL Draft in April where he is expected to be chosen very early in the first round.

Hunter and his fiancée plan on “tying the knot” next May.
