He is one of the four finalists up for the Heisman Trophy, has set more than a few records in his college career, is a two way player, and now can add AP Player of the Year to his list of accomplishments.
And that isn’t all…Hunter is going home with an armload of trophies – he won Player of the Year honours with the Walter Camp Award, defensive player of the year honours with the Chuck Bednarik Award, and wide receiver honours with the Biletnikoff Award.
Colorado Buffaloes player Travis Hunter is sure to be drafted next April in the NFL Draft; the question is at what position…the elite receiver or the cornerback terrorizing the offense?
Hunter earned 26 of the 43 votes from the AP Top 25 voters. Ashton Jeanty of Boise State and Cameron Skattebo from Arizona State rounded out the top three.
Hunter’s response to the awards was, “couldn’t do what I do without my team. So I view being up for these awards as team awards.”
After being overlooked for the Jim Thorpe Award, head coach Deion Sanders vowed to give Hunter his trophy. Sanders won the award in 1988 while attending Florida State University.
Hunter said, “Coach Prime was the only coach who would consider allowing me to do what I’m doing. He did it and knows what it takes — how much you have to be ready on both sides of the ball.”
He continued, “I’m motivated when people tell me I can’t do something. That I can’t dominate on both sides of the ball. I want to be an example for others that anything is possible. Keep pursuing your dreams.”
After following Sanders and sons Shedeur and Shiloh from Jackson State to Colorado University, Hunter helped to lead the Buffalos to a 9 and 3 record in only their second year with the team.
Seldom off the field of play, Hunter was in 688 defensive plays and 672 offensive plays in 2024 with 92 catches for 1,152 yards, 14 touchdowns, four interceptions, eleven pass breakups, and a forced fumble.
If Hunter wins the Heisman this weekend, he will be only the second Colorado player to do so; along with Rashaan Salaam.
Quarterback Shedeur Sanders spoke on teammate Travis Hunter saying, “I’m used to seeing him do all this spectacular stuff. I’m used to all this stuff — you all are just now seeing it on national stage.”
