Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is going to make her debut on Broadway in a one night appearance on December 14. But it will not be in the women’s voting rights musical “Suffs” as one might expect; Jackson will have a walk on role in the modern jukebox musical spoof of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, “&Juliet”.
After the show is a post-show talkback which she will also be a part.
Jackson became a part of the United States Supreme Court on June 30, 2022 after being appointed by President Joe Biden. The appointment made Jackson the first woman of colour to sit on the nation’s highest court.
Jackson wrote in her memoir on her love of theatre saying, “I, a Miami girl from a modest background with an unabashed love of theatre, dreamed of one day ascending to the highest court in the land—and I had said so in one of my supplemental application essays. I expressed that I wished to attend Harvard as I believed it might help me ‘to fulfill my fantasy of becoming the first Black, female Supreme Court justice to appear on a Broadway stage.’”
On December 14, that dream will come true!
The show has not specified what Jackson’s role would be.
Starring Maya Boyd, Paulo Szot, Alison Luff, Drew Gehling, Liam Pearce, Michael Ivan Carrier, Jeannette Bayardelle, and Nathan Levy; “& Juliet” imagines what would happen if Juliet and Romeo hadn’t “ended it”.
