The musical “Swept Away” – a musical about four survivors of a shipwreck in 1888 – features music by the Americana band the Avett Brothers.

After an official opening on November 19, the show has announced a closing date of December 15.  It will have had just 20 previews and 32 performances when it closes.  While shows like “Wicked” and “The Lion King” routinely bring in $2 million a week, “Swept Away” has struggled at the box office and after bringing in less than half a million dollars, the show is not making enough to cover the payroll.  Many of the shows saw significant increases during Thanksgiving week; “Swept Away” has brought in less than half a million each week.

Speaking on the decision, producers Matthew Masten, Sean Hudock, and Madison Wells Live said via a statement, “we are deeply proud of this beautiful production and the years of work that it took to get to Broadway. We will forever be indebted to our fantastic creative team, our loyal actors, and all of our co-producers and in turn their investors, for believing in this production and taking a risk on new work.”
