The reviews for the new Moana film “Moana 2” have been mixed but that did not stop movie and Disney fans from flocking to theatres over the Thanksgiving weekend and shattering records in the process.
The record setting began on Thanksgiving Day when “Moana 2” brought in $28 million at the box office; shattering the old record of $15 million set by “Frozen 2” in 2019. The film went on to shatter the highest Thanksgiving weekend box office of all time, the highest five day draw in the United States, and the highest box office ever for international theatres with $389 million! Over the five day holiday release, “Moana 2” brought in a total of $424 million globally!
“Moana 2” has the Polynesian wayfinder joining forces with demigod Maui to break a curse.
Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman spoke on the film saying, “’Moana 2’ has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that ‘Moana’ has become. We’re fortunate to have an incredibly talented and hard-working creative team at Disney Animation who brought this new adventure to life, alongside our wonderful stars Auli’i and Dwayne and great new music. This is a moment to celebrate, and we’re thankful to all the moviegoers and fans who’ve helped make this a record-breaking debut.”
Over the holiday weekend, “Moana 2” was competing with “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” for movie goers attention.
