For the second week in a row a playoff driver has been eliminated from a race; but this time there is no hop of a redemption.

Alex Bowman earned his way into the round of eight playoff drivers despite his 18th place finish for all four of the Hendrick Motorsports cars to remain in the playoffs.

But during the post race inspection process, NASCAR determined that the number 48 car was too light – cars are supposed to weigh 3,400 pounds – and as a result, Bowman was disqualified from the race and placed in 38th – last – place.

The move eliminated Bowman from the playoffs; leaving eliminated driver Joey Logano to take over the final spot in the round of eight.

Managing Director of the Cup Series for NASCAR Brad Moran elaborated on the disqualification saying, “unfortunately, the 48 had an issue (and) did not meet minimum weight.  We put the car to the side. We continued on. We … gave them the opportunity to fuel the car as well as purge the water system and add water. So we gave them every opportunity to make minimum weight. We ran them back through. Unfortunately, they were light again. They are allowed a 0.5% weight break, which is for usage of fluids and so on. That’s about 17 pounds.

He added, “we backed the car back off the scales, ran it back on and then, unfortunately, it was the same weight. So the car had a weight issue. All the other cars cleared inspection. The 48 didn’t, and that ends up in a disqualification.”

Moran did not elaborate on how light the 48 car was citing the possibility of an appeal by HMS saying, “if the appeal happens, it’ll be expedited, so it’ll probably happen in the next couple of days.  So really can’t get into all the details of the information, but the car was light, and that’s where we ended up.”

NASCAR will take the 48 car back to their Research and Development Center for further study.

HMS owner Rick Hendrick noted via social media, “we are working to understand the issue and will make a decision Monday about whether to submit an appeal.”

Bowman joins Austin Cindric, Daniel Suárez and Chase Briscoe as the drivers eliminated from the playoffs.
