On Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway, post-race inspection after the United Rentals 250 revealed that the JR Motorsports number one car driven by Sam Mayer did not meet the ride height requirements.  As a result, NASCAR disqualified Mayer from the race; sending him tumbling in the point standings.  He was in fourth place going in to Talladega; with the penalty, he drops to eleventh – 13 points below the cut line with one more race in the round before the lowest four drivers are eliminated from the playoffs.

Mayer finished the race in 16th place but with the disqualification, he was dropped to 38th place and earned a single point.

On Monday JRM has announced has announced that they will be appealing the ruling.

Going into Talladega Sammy Smith was last in the playoff list; but he has now secured a spot on the next round of the playoffs after winning the race.  A Roval win may be Mayer’s only hope of staying in the playoffs past Charlotte Motor Speedway.
