Before he died in 1981 as a result of cancer at the age of 36, Reggae star Bob Marley fathered nearly a dozen children. As they approach what would have been Marley’s 80th birthday, the five sons – Ziggy, Stephen, Julian, Ky-Mani, and Damian – have come together to spread the peace and love their father was known for in a North American tour.
The brothers are also hoping to record a new album that will “push their father’s message of positivity forward.” “The message in the music is what it’s really all about,” said Stephen. “For me, that message is so necessary now. Our father is one of those powerful ones that got this message across. That’s why we’re here.”
As that tour nears an end, it is the first time that all five of the brothers have performed together in over 20 years. Over the years a couple have shared the stage together, but all five have not been on stage as one in many years.
With Stephen and Julian at his side, Ziggy spoke on the tour saying, “This was very important. When the opportunity arise, we can come get together, cherish and appreciate it. That’s the big part of it — just being able to do this together. Time is moving.”
All entertainers in their own right, the brothers came together to blend their sounds and perform the music they have grown up hearing and singing.
Speaking on their Dad’s music Julian said, “his message goes beyond barriers. It breaks down barriers. No matter which country you go to, the people need the same message. That’s why this is so everlasting. Never ending. That is the reason we are here and doing this mission.”
Between them, the Marley brothers have earned a total of 22 Grammy Awards.
