The week following the two day event that was the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the Prime Time Emmy Awards celebrates 76 years of television with father and son Emmy winning actors Eugene and Dan Levy.
“Shogun” topped the list of winners in the Creative Arts Emmys and has the opportunity to add to that total in the Prime Time Awards.
With 23 nominations, “The Bear” is the most nominated comedy in the history of the Emmys.
Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short present the first award of the night for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series to Evan Moss Bachrach in “The Bear”.
The award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series went to Billy Crudup in “The Morning Show”.
The award for Lead Actor in a comedy Series went to Jeremy Allen White in “The Bear”.
The award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series went to Liza Colon-Zayas for “The Bear”. This is her first nomination and win.
The award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series went to Elizabeth Debicki in “The Crown”. This is her first Emmy win.
Candice Bergen spoke on her time on “Murphy Brown” and a little political reference before presenting the award for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series to Jean Smart in “Hacks”. She took the stage to a standing ovation.
The award for “Outstanding Reality Competition Series” goes to “The Traitors”. Show host Alan Cummings won Best Host last week in the Creative Arts Emmys.
The award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie went to Jessica Gunning in “Baby Reindeer”. This is her first Emmy win.
The award for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series went to “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”.
Celebrating 50 years of “Saturday Night Live” a few of the cast members over the years presented the award for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Series to Alex Edleman. This is his first Emmy win. SNL has won over 200 Emmys over the course of the show.
The award for Outstanding Direction of a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie went to Steven Zaillian for “Ripley”. This is his first Emmy win. The nominees were presented in Spanish.
After speaking on TV Moms and how far they have come, the award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series went to Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky for “Hacks”.
Billy Crystal presented the award for Outstanding Talk Series went to “The Daily Show”. Prior to announcing the winner, Crystal read about first appearances on the nominees from his diary.
The award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie went to Lamorne Morris in “Fargo”. This is his first Emmy win.
The award for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series went to Will Smith for “Slow Horses – Negotiating with Tigers”. The Englishman opened his speech with, relax, I come in peace.
The award for Outstanding Writing in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie went to Richard Gadd for “Baby Reindeer”. He accepted his first ever Emmy wearing a kilt. Noting that 10 years ago he was struggling, Gadd encouraged people to keep going because it does get better.
“Happy Days” has an Emmy 50 year reunion with Ron Howard and Henry Wrinkler. They presented the award for Outstanding Direction in a Comedy Series to Christopher Storer for “The Bear – Fishes”.
This year’s Emmy Awards is the most diverse in television history…but there is still a lot of work to do.
The Television Academy Governor’s Award goes to television icon Greg Berlanti who aired the first gay kiss between teens on “Dawson’s Creek”. He also had the first gay wedding and the first transgender superhero. He called receiving the award “deeply humbling”. His career began as a puppeteer doing shows at birthday parties. He noted that the world has come a long way from the days as a scared gay kid to a husband with two children accepting the Governor’s Award.
Members of the USA Olympic and Paralymic team presented the award for Outstanding Direction in a Drama Series went to Frederick E.O. Toye for “Shogun – Crimson Sky”. This is his first Emmy Award win.
Jelly Roll performs for the In Memorium segment of the show that pays tribute to those who have passed on over the past year.
The award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie went to Richard Gaad in “Baby Reindeer” – his second win of the night. Adding to his previous speech, Gadd said to always follow your heart and the rest will fall into place.
The award for Outstanding Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie went to Jodi Foster in “True Detective – North Country”. She noted that it was a blessing to hear the stories of the Indigenous People of Alaska. This was Foster’s first Emmy win.
Emmy Award winner Jean Smart presented the award for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series or Move to “Baby Reindeer”.
The award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series went to Hiroyuki Sanada in “Shogun”. This is his first nomination and win.
The award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series went to Anna Sawai in “Shogun”. This is her first nomination and win.
Cast members from “The West Wing” presented the award for Outstanding Drama Series to “Shogun”. This makes 19 wins of the 25 nominations for “Shogun” – the most in television history.
In the final award of the night, the award for Outstanding Comedy Series went to “Hacks”.
