It seems that when the planners create a city, they forget a good portion of the population.
If I were to create a city, the first thing I would do is to lay out a proper mass transportation system; one that would cover the entire city and branch out into the outlying areas.
America is a car driven society that neglects the people who don’t drive. I see visitors come from all over the world that live in areas that make good use of mass transit and have no need to drive or even own a vehicle.
Being able to get from point A to point B and even point A to point Z, is essential for any city; whether it be underground or above ground or a combination of both.
A proper mass transit system also requires a road system that is laid out in a format that is not haphazardly thrown out there. Some of the very old cities make use of old paths originally made by Native hunters and frontiersmen. These paths often wander and have no real layout just wonder as they follow game or avoid hostel communities.
Many cities have laws that segregate residential, business, shopping, and entertainment areas. But why??? Why can’t all of the areas be mixed together where people can live where they work…and play? This would also help with the transportation issues. Instead of having to travel clear to the other side of the city, a person could simply walk or ride a few blocks…or even next door. It would make things much easier for the population if shopping were nearby.
In many areas, laws have been enacted to force cities to treat all of their citizens equally and fairly. My city would do so voluntarily…taking into account that not everyone is the same and some people require a little extra consideration – ramps, braille, non-verbal language, public facilities open to everyone, etc.
My idea of a city is definitely futuristic and likely to never happen because politics…and religion…get in the way of doing what is right.
