It’s the final day of events for the swimmers at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris; but there is still plenty of action over the next week with new events getting ready to begin competition.

In track and field, American Noah Lyles barely edged out Jamaican Kishane Thompson – just five thousandths of a second – to win the gold medal in the 100 meters.  Officials took 30 seconds – three times longer than it took to run the race – to study the photo finish to determine the winner of the race.  In fact, the top seven finishers were just .09 seconds apart.

Tennis star Novak Djokovic can finally add an Olympic Gold medal to his impressive trophy case after beating Carlos Alcaraz.

In 2016, the International Olympic Committee created the Refugee Olympic Team; allowing athletes displaced from their homes to compete in the Games.  Originally from Cameroon (in Africa), Cindy Ngamba became the first athlete under the Refugee flag when she earned an Olympic medal.  A boxer, she is assured of at least a bronze.

In the medal standings, a total of 70 countries have joined the medal parade.  The United States joins the People’s Republic of China at the top of the list, tying at 19 gold medals.  The U.S. had dominated the overall medal list from early on and now has a lead of over 25 with 71 total medals earned.  The number of countries with double digit medal wins holds at 12 with six of them in double digits when it comes to gold medals.
