In the first full week of performances after the gala event known as the Tony Awards, the box office receipts for some of the winning shows went soaring.
As Broadway prepared to honour achievement in the theatre, “Ben Platt Live at the Palace”, “Uncle Vanya”, and “Mother Play” were all playing their final shows; meaning there were only 32 shows running last week to bring in a a cumulative $37.6 million at the box office.
The Revival of a Musical winner “Merrily We Roll Along” joined “The Lion King” and “Wicked” in the $2 million club; while Bet Play winner “Stereophonic”, Best Musical winner “The Outsiders”, and “An Enemy of the People” all joined the Million Dollar Club for the first time.
Last week was the final week of performances for Leading Actor in a Play winner Jeremy Strong and “An Enemy of the People”. It was also the final week of performances for “Patriots” and “The Heart of Rock and Roll”.
Nineteen of the 32 shows made the Million Dollar club last week.
