After five weeks of straight racing, the Craftsman Truck Series is taking a couple of weeks off; in the meantime, the Cup and Xfinity Series drivers did a little road course racing at a newly paved Sonoma Raceway in the wine country of California.
Thirty-eight drivers took to the track in the Cup Series for the Save Mart 350. The first two stages of the race looked more like a short track on a Saturday night. Points leader Denny Hamlin made an early exit when his engine blew up on the second lap of the race.
Kyle Larson earned his third win of the season and takes over the points lead. Larson also leads all Cup Series drivers in stage wins with seven and 167 stage points
Having enough fuel was an issue again this week when Martin Truex Jr and Kyle Busch ran out on the last lap. Truex was just short of the finish line to end the race in second when he ran out of fuel and crept across the finish line in 27th place – the last car on the lead lap.
Just 10 more races remain in the regular season.
